Kings of rock'n'roll, 30 Mar 2005
Swervedriver were one of the great indie rock acts of the very late 80's-90's. Their early releases (the first 3 eps on Creation) were instant classics. Mark Gardner, singer of fello creation band, Ride, apparently passed on their demo to the head of Creation. After the first eps, came Raise. A beautiful album, but somewhat poorly produced in my opinion. It featured a few tracks from the eps, but they felt muted compared to the early takes. I saw them live (Must have been about '91?) at a local club in essex, and they were amazing!! Compared to the shoegaze stuff around at the time, it was quite refreshing. To me, this is when Swervedriver were at their best. Course, their second album was phenomenal aswell. "Never loose that feeling/never learn" is still one of my all time favourite tracks. (unfortunately, it is only the edited single version on this release) After various line up changes they pretty much started to go down hill from there. They began to experiment with different sounds, and the rock seemed to disappear. I am sure they had to evolve in some way, but to me they just lost their appeal. Still way better than the other indie bands around at that time like Blur and Oasis, though. Fortunately, or unfortunately for them, they never became part of the brit-pop scene. Down to this release. Why only 4 stars? As I prefer the older tracks, it would have been nice to see more of the early ep tracks on here, all remastered. I am glad that the tracks from Raise sound quite fresh, but could have done with more. If Swervedriver are new to you, and at the price this is, this is a great place to start. If you love them, I mean really get into them, then have fun searching for their old releases!!! e-bay here we come... ; )
