5.0 out of 5 stars AspectJ In Action, 8 Jan 2004
By Mike Evans (Edinburgh United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
AspectJ is an extension to the Java language, not an AOP (Aspect Orientated Programming) framework itself.
This is the first thing I learnt reading this book, and from there I kept on learning.
AOP is more, far more, than simply another way of abstracting logging functionality.
The author succeeds brilliantly in gradually building your understanding of AOP, then AspectJ's own semantics, and then the coding possibilities these offer.
The writing is clear and accessible, the content expertly graduated.
Even if AspectJ is not the AOP implementation you eventually chose to use, this book is the perfect way to gain an understanding of AOP, and decide if it suits your coding future.
Even though I have now read it through, this book will serve as my first point of reference for the patterns I need as I venture into the world of AOP.
My thanks to the author for a superb book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book!, 17 Nov 2003
By U. Bettag (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
"AspectJ in Action" is by far the best programming related book I read for a long time. Especially, I enjoyed the structure of the book, which gives someone who has no clue about AOP an idea what it is all about. The examples, are great and there are no logical gaps. In summary, AspectJ in Action provides a general introduction into AOP/AspectJ and explains the concepts on real life scenarios. The book is suitable for the beginner and expert, covers all AOP relevant topics and drills further down on advanced AOP techniques.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book on a promising evolution in software development, 27 Aug 2003
For a java developmer, the book explains clearly what AOP is all about. Then proceeds with examples to get started, go in more depth later on until the advance topics. Finally practical examples are elaborated. A typical approach found in many IT technology books.
The author is enthousiast explaining the benifits but shows also some risks.
Of course the 5 stars are influenced but the fact that AOP and AspectJ is very promising and maybe we have overexpectations. Probably this book will help to gain momentum, but it will take some more time to get overall acceptance. At least the book showed to me how to apply AspectJ on limited developments and get benefit from it.
