Synopsis

Volume 74 in the Agatha Christie Collection (1973). Limited edition of 1000 copies worldwide.

About the Author

Agatha Christie was born in Torquay in 1890 and became, quite simply, the best-selling novelist in history. Her first novel, The Mysterious Affair at Styles, written towards the end of the First World War, introduced us to Hercule Poirot, who was to become the most popular detective in crime fiction since Sherlock Holmes. She is known throughout the world as the Queen of Crime. Her books have sold over a billion copies in the English language and another billion in over 100 foreign languages. She is the author of 80 crime novels and short story collections, 19 plays, and six novels under the name of Mary Westmacott. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

2.0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing end to the Tommy and Tuppence series., 26 Jun 2001
By W. O'NEILL "Sochalien anglais" (Wirral, England.) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The last book published before Christie's death turns out to be a big let down. The Beresfords have become tedious and the endless conversations about dogs are a huge turn off - more at home in one of the children's books with which this story abounds. Unlike the previous Tommy and Tuppence books, the action is minimal and it is a real struggle to finish this book. The end is predictable and the one moment of excitement not even that excitement. Also, the old enemies in the past idead is dredged up again from the vastly superior 'The Secret Adversary' and we are left with a tired old book which doesn't deliver. Avoid.

1.0 out of 5 stars A real drag, 11 Sep 2007
By Ms. MacNeill (London) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
A bit of a disappointment. This was the last book that Christie wrote and it shows: Tommy and Tuppence seem to make some reference to their age or the fact that things have changed since their youth every few pages. After a while, this became tiresome: Agatha, I got it. Your characters aren't Bright Young Things anymore. That being said, this aspect may make "Postern of Fate" more appealing to more mature readers, and the dialogue of the dog, which I found a little too cutesy, might draw in younger ones.

Ironically - given that I love Poirot and his dramatic conclusions - I found the story far too farfetched. I just *couldn't* believe what went on in the past - and Christie's failure to sell the story meant that she failed to sell me the book as a whole.

I found myself becoming bored by the mystery, although to be fair Tommy and Tuppence appear to be more concerned with bringing down spies than solving murders anyway. I found it hard to care about what was going on and, as a previous reviewer said, once we found out whodunit, it was still left unclear whydunit. This was my first Tommy and Tuppence novel and I can't say that I feel too encouraged to pick up the previous ones.

A real let-down to an otherwise wonderful writing career.

1.0 out of 5 stars A disappointment, 29 Jun 1999
By A Customer
The only reason I kept reading this book after the few initial chapters was that its written by Agatha Christie. I have always enjoyed her mysteries but this one was extremely boring and repetitive, wasn't much of a mystery anyway. I love the way Agatha Christie shapes her characters in other books but if one wants to keep admiring her genius, avoid Postern Of Fate.
