Rising Stars Winner

Amazon Rising Stars
The Hungry Ghosts
Congratulations to Anne Berry, who is the winner of our Autumn 2009 Rising Stars with her debut novel. The Hungry Ghosts is the story of 12-year-old Alice Safford, living in colonial Hong Kong, who finds herself the target of a parasitic ghost. As successive tragedies engulf her, Alice's ghostly entourage swells alarmingly.

Anne's novel received the most positive reception from Amazon customers. Here's what some of you had to say about it:

"This is such an original piece of work, I am not sure how to describe it. It is a ghost story but then again, it isn't a ghost story. Anne Berry's writing was a joy, lyrical and flowing a wonderful debut novel."

"I found this book to be thoroughly absorbing, loved the descriptive powers of the author, and found that I could actually 'see' the colours that she described, her writing was so good. A triumph."

Dear Customers, Kindle is the most wished for, the most gifted, and the #1 bestselling product across all the millions of items we sell on Amazon.com, but prior to today it has been available only to U.S. customers. Now for the first time, our Kindle wireless reading device is available to customers around the world. With Kindle, you can think of a book and be reading it in less than 60 seconds. Kindle uses the same 3G wireless technology as advanced mobile phones, with coverage in over 100 countries worldwide, so you never need to hunt for a Wi-Fi hotspot. Unlike mobile phones, there are no monthly data charges and no yearly contracts. There is no software to install, and no syncing required. You shop and download books wirelessly right from the device. Kindle is as thin as a typical magazine and weighs less than a paperback--but can hold 1,500 books. Its electronic-ink display looks and reads like real paper without glare--even in bright sunlight. Long battery life lets you read for up to two weeks on a single charge. The Kindle Store has more than 250,000 books available to UK customers, plus UK and international newspapers, including The Times, Telegraph, Daily Mail, and The New York Times. You can expect to see many more books from UK publishers available in the coming weeks and months. Our vision for Kindle is to have every book ever printed, in any language, all available in under 60 seconds. We hope you enjoy the benefits of Kindle--the convenience of reading what you want, when you want it, the immediacy of getting books wirelessly delivered in less than 60 seconds, and Kindle's ability to 'disappear' in your hands so you can get lost in the author's words. UK customers can order Kindle now on Amazon.com. In the future, we plan to introduce a UK-centric Kindle experience, enabling you to purchase Kindle and Kindle books in sterling from our Amazon.co.uk site. We hope you enjoy Kindle. Jeff Bezos, Founder, Amazon.com P.S. Kindle is currently only dispatched from Amazon.com. You can use your existing Amazon.co.uk account to purchase on Amazon.com. No need to set up a new account.
