Overall a very good buy, 5 Sep 2005
This is my third digital camera. I had decided to buy what I considered to be an upmarket camera for my holidays and my increasing interest in photography. The A200 is very solidly built. The movable screen is truly a godsend. You would not believe how many photographs I have been able to take at what otherwise would have been rather difficult angles. The Anti-Shake feature is stunning. Not all cameras in this price range have this feature (notably the Fuji S5000, S5500, S7000 and the new S9500). When considering other cameras to buy, I was left with the choice of the A200 and the Panasonic DMC FZ20. Although the FZ20 has a lens equivalent to 36mm - 432mm compared to the A200's 28mm - 200mm, I decided to go for the A200 because as some of you will know in order to avoid distortion you should try to avoid using your camera at max or min focal length. If you consider the FZ20's lens, this would mean that you practically would/could not use it's lens until 40/45mm. The clincher was the fact that the A200 has a manual zoom (more like traditional SLRs) compared to the push button zoom of the FZ20 and other digital cameras in this price bracket. The A200 is extremely well made, has a practical battery life of around 150 pictures, and is very satisfying to hold and use. It produces extremely clear and vivid pictures and with the Anti Shake feature they are very sharp too. It has a range of useful functions such as scene presets and aperture and shutter priority (which you think you will never use but actually do!). It also has a hot shoe to allow you to attach an external flash gun, which, in my opinion is necessary since the useful flash distance of the attached flash is only around 5feet at best. Extremely good value for money. Be warned though - you will get addicted to this camera and photography. Three months down the line you'll wonder why you didn't go for a proper SLR. But then just remind yourself that they don't come with Anti-Shake (yet!). The only minor gripe I have about this camera is the fact that it sometimes has difficulty focusing, which is also a little on the slow side. However, for the money, you can hardly complain. Friends of mine have had to spend nearly as twice as much money on other cameras to solve this 'problem'.
