Product Description

Album Description

Originally released in 1994, saxophonist Theo Travis' second
solo CD, 'View from the Edge', marked his arrival as a major force in
British jazz as player and composer. With a strong personal identity, the
music features strong colours and elements of other musics including the
more experimental end of rock. The album was described as a successful
example of "progressive jazz" and was voted Best British CD of 1994 in
Jazz on CD magazine.

'View from the Edge - Deluxe Edition' is a 2-CD set comprising the original
album digitally remastered, and a second CD with 3 alternative takes, 2
reconstruction/remixes and a live track from the Jazz Cafe, London. Each of
the alternative takes offers something different from the corresponding
original album track. The reconstruction/remixes - including one by
composer/producer and Soft Machine bassist Hugh Hopper - involve
reassembling the pieces by looping, filtering, sampling, rebuilding and
remixing the tracks from their component elements.

Theo Travis is well known on the British jazz scene for his 5 solo albums
and his frequent touring with his quartet. He has played with Palle
Mikkelborg, John Etheridge, Mervyn Africa, Lol Coxhill, Roger Beaujolais
and Steve Lodder and has performed and recorded with such art rock and
experimental artists as Anja Garbarek, Roger Eno, Hugh Hopper, Mick Karn,
Steve Jansen, Richard Barbieri (ex-Japan), and Porcupine Tree. For the last
three years he has also been a member and featured soloist of psychedelic
space rock band Gong with Daevid Allen. While 'View from the Edge' predates
these musical explorations, it shows Theo Travis' early inclination towards
experimentation, a determination to do things his own way and not follow
the mainstream.

Personnel:
Theo Travis - (tenor sax/flute), David Gordon - (piano), Mark Wood -
(guitar), Rob Statham - (electric bass), Ichihuro Tatsuhara - (drums) with
guests: Tony Coe - (bass clarinet/tenor sax), Jeff Clyne - (double bass),
John Marshall - (drums)
