5.0 out of 5 stars "Possibly More?" Definitely More - and Possibly Their Best Remix Yet!, 2 Jun 2009
By Michael J. Thomas "DJ Saint" (San Francisco) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I was lucky enough to obtain an advance promo CD of the tracks on the "Did You See Me Coming" twelve-inch, and the "PSB Possibly More Mix" of DYSMC included here is a masterpiece. It is a perfect example of how a remix can turn an already giddy pop song into a real opus, complete with a counter-melody, original lyrics and editorializing by Neil and Chris, all while preserving the feel of the original and leaving you no choice but to run screaming to the dancefloor.

While the Pet Shop Boys have had some incredible remixes by others (Moby's "Miserablism," Sasha's "West End Girls" and the Voxigen remix of "IWNDTKOT" for instance), it is becoming clear that their own remixing skills are among the best: Madonna's "Sorry," The Killers "Read My Mind" and others all add their magic to the songs while preserving (and amplifying) the sentiment of the originals.

This remix clearly brings out the tongue-in-cheek sexuality of the title and reworks the song into a sort of personals ad. As the typically propulsive PSB beat builds, a loop of "come" plays underneath until Neil intones in his classic detached speaking style "Men seeking women, women seeking men, women seeking women, men seeking men...for friendship..." and in pops Chris to finish the sentence: "...and possibly more." A bold overlay, deadpan funny, classic PSB, and genius! Things just keep getting better - next up is a counter-melody that you will be singing to yourself for days after you hear it: Neil's winsome voice and a classic PSB minor chord as he laments(!) "Every night is Friday night - welcome to my life." An amazing synth line slowly takes you back to the original beat and feel and then you get Neil again, this time reciting an entire personals ad - the rhyming and deadpan humor of this segment alone is worth the price of admission!

Needless to say, it is over 2 minutes into the remix when they give you the first strains of the song's chorus, and like the best remixes, when it hits, the goosebumps do too. The "possibly more" and synth lines are artfully woven in and out until at around 4 minutes you finally get "You don't have to be in 'Who's Who' to know what's what" and the main portion of the song begins in earnest.

In the same way that "Yes" brings together so many of your favorite PSB sounds, textures and feelings in an original fashion, this remix will trigger all the right synapses and have you flashing back to everything from the "Who, what, where, when" remix of "Was It Worth It" to the spoken bits in "Paninaro." It is definitely their most exciting and original remix in recent memory, and an endorphin-releasing example of how to do a remix right!

The two other remixes are excellent also - Richard X's fantastic remix of "The Way It Used To Be" that rivals the "Fugitive" remix and Kid Unicorn's cute and satisfying remix of "DYSMC" - but even these can't compare to the disco mastery on display in the PSB's wonderful "Possibly More" remix.
