3.0 out of 5 stars A challenge to mix?, 14 Mar 2009
By Mr. D. J. O'brien - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This remix CD has six tracks on it - which is definately value for money - but are the mixes any good?

1. Love etc. - album version
This is the single mix - and is a brilliant track. I think what it's trying to say as a song - is definately something of our time. With an off beat rhythm and lots of chanting - it's a fists in the air pop track - great production and everytime you listen to it, you catch something new in the arrangement.

2. Pet Shop Boys mix
This isn't an extended mix as such - but a REMIX of the whole song - with an electronic arrangement. It's made it more of a dance track. Which is what mixes are all about. I think its the best of the mixes here.

3. Gui Boratto mix
When first listening to this - I realised what a difficult song it is to mix - because to make it to have a 4/4 dance beat - the rhythm has to change - some of this mix works - but other bits seem to suffer a little bit. It doesn't have the whole song in it either - but it would be quite difficult to do that because of the style of song.

4. Kurd Maverick Mix
This is the most fun of the mixes. Focusing on the chanting bits of the song - and there's an acoustic breakdown in the middle which is a nice surprise. Once again - the whole song isn't in it.

5. Frankmusik Star & Garter Dub
Even though it says its a dub - there are still bits of the original song in it. It's all chopped about and blended into a weird spikey dance track though. LOTS of the chanting is in it.

6. Kurd Maverick Dub
This is exactly the same as track 4 - but taking out the main vocals. I think it sounds better with less of the song in it!

All in all - an average bunch of mixes really. The main song is brilliant - but alot of these mixes I'd probably listen to only a few times - except the Pet Shop Boys mix which is definately the best version. The whole thing is in a cardboard sleeve as well and not a CD case.

4.0 out of 5 stars Et cetera, 5 April 2009

As usual Pet Shop Boys have released a second CD single that actually has some decent mixes rather than with some other bands who seem to release second CDs with a morass of filler. The first two mixes don't stray too far from the original but the other four are moody and original takes on the song. Worth buying even if you have the first CD and the album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pet Shop Boys return with another slice of synth-pop perfection, 14 Mar 2009

So, Love Etc. - the lead single from what's being called the Xenomania album. Being touted as their most commercial since 1993's Very, in many ways Love Etc. fulfills this. It's catchiness is undeniable, the repeated 'you need more' chants twisted round an infectious synth hook is Pet Shop Boys at their best, creating tracks with lush production fronted up by Neil's witty-as-ever lyrics.

Bringing to mind, if anything, How Can You Expect To Be Taken Seriously - Love Etc. shares that tracks outlook on modern celebrity culture and does it perfect style. After a fantastic BRIT awards performance this track will hopefully shoot the Boys back into the upper reaches of the charts where they belong.

We're also treated to a number of mixes of the track on here, the Kurd Maverick mix is deliciously quirky in its retroness and even throws in some acoustic guitar. The Gui Boratto mix is functional and on the whole pleasant enough, even if a little bland while the Frankmusik mix is full of glitchy bleeps and distorted basslines. Nothing amazing out of this bunch, but they're decent enough.

The highlight however comes in the PSB's own mix of the song which ups the dance and electro vibe of the song. Very good indeed this one is.

[This is CD 2 of a 2 CD set and comes in a card slipcase]
