Product Description

Product Description

A high-end, 24 mm super-wide-angle, optical zoom, digital compact featuring high resolution 12 megapixel CCD coupled with the latest imaging engine SIE III The GX200 is able to reproduce high quality images from edge-to-edge with low noise and natural gradation. This camera succeeds the award winning Caplio GX100 compact digital camera introduced in April 2007. The GX200 inherits the popular features of the GX100 such as a 24 to 72 mm (35 mm film equivalent focal length) high-performance wide-angle optical zoom lens on a 25 mm thin pocketable compact body, a wide variety of manual shooting functions, and a removable tilting electronic viewfinder. The new GX200 achieves increased resolution via its 12 megapixel CCD and dramatic noise reduction with the addition of the new image processing engine Smooth Imaging Engine III. Already a popular part of the Caplio GX100, the high-resolution wide-angle lens unit has been further configured to enable picture taking at an even higher resolution. With a large wide-viewing angle 2.7-inch 460,000 dots HVGA LCD and an electronic level function, for horizontal and vertical shooting, the GX200 contains extensive shooting functions to enable camera lovers to enjoy and create stunning photographs. This model comes in two package types with different accessories. The GX200 package contains: rechargeable lithium ion battery, battery charger, AV cable, USB cable, CD-ROM, strap, and lens cap. The GX200 VF KIT package contains all the above accessories plus the electronic viewfinder.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Compact, 5 Sep 2009
By J. Bowman (London, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I've owned this kit (GX200 and VF-1 viewfinder) for about three months now and have used it quite extensively. Like many people in the market for a 'serious compact', I checked the main alternatives, in particular the Canon G10, the Lumix LX3 and also the fixed focal length Ricoh GRD II which all seemed like excellent cameras. For some reason though, I was drawn towards the GX200 as its features best matched what I was looking for.

I like the size, shape and feel in the hand and the camera feels well constructed. The operating system is a breeze to use and the function buttons and wheels give the flexibility and usability of an SLR. It is very easy to set up focus/exposure modes, image quality, ISO settings etc, and you can easily configure the main controls to personal preferences. The 24mm equivalent wide angle lens is great for buildings and 'big sky' landscape shots. Image quality is very good, certainly on a par with some SLRs I have used (I also have a Canon EOS 400D with a couple of prime lenses and a couple of zooms) and the 1cm macro allows shots which would not be possible at this price on an SLR. I generally use the electronic viewfinder most of the time as the shooting information is on the screen and the tilting mechanism allows for some more unusual angles, especially when shooting buildings from below. I haven't used the RAW function too much as generally I've been happy with the quality of JPEGS but it's nice to have. The f2.5 lens and image stabilisation allows a reasonable degree of low light shooting and the flash output can be manually adjusted. In fact I've found that leaving the flash on one-eighth power has been perfectly sufficient for my purposes. I not too keen on using high ISO settings and naturally, the image quality does suffer once over 200 ISO, but switching to B&W mode actually gives a warm grainy feel to the pictures. Battery life is really good, I managed well over 400 shots off one charge and the battery meter had only just started to go down. The ability to slip in a couple of AAA batteries in case the main battery runs out is a really good back-up feature though. One fantastic feature is the ability to take shots at intervals between 5 seconds and three hours, brilliant for experimenting with time-lapse photography. In manual mode, exposures can be set up to 180 seconds so great for some long exposure shots as well.

In short this GX200 has everything (and more) I could want wish for from a compact camera and would highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended, 20 Jul 2009
By Charlanon (London) - See all my reviews
I wanted a good quality, reasonably light compact with a wide-angle lens, viewfinder and manual exposure mode. I nearly overlooked the GX 200 because of a lukewarm review in `What Digital Camera' (WDC) magazine. Subsequently I found reviews in other magazines and blogs that were much more favourable.

For me it came down to a choice between this and a Canon Powershot G10. I went for the GX 200 because it's lighter (208g vs 350g), less bulky; and also I really liked the fact that the shooting settings are brought up into the viewfinder.

Ergonomically it's a pleasure to handle with convenient controls and a clear menu system. The quality of the results is excellent. I had one moment of anxiety when I noticed white speckling and fringing on viewing photos with the supplied Irodio editing software. However this seems to be a feature of the software, because the fringing goes away when using other editors and in prints.

As noted in the WDC magazine review, the flash does seem overpowered when used for portraits in auto mode, but that's easily remedied by switching to manual mode and reducing the setting. The other criticism they had (high noise) is unlikely to be problem for me as I rarely shoot in low light conditions. In any case this was not reported as a problem by other reviewers.

One minor gripe: if you want a lens cover that automatically opens when the camera is powered up you have to buy this as an accessory.
