Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

Panasonic introduced the LUMIX 10.1-megapixel DMC-LZ10 with 30mm wide angle (35 mm equivalent: 30-150mm) 5x optical zoom Leica DC lens with both excellent optical performance and compactness of the lens unit perfectly combined. The camera is substantially refined to look much slimmer and compact compared to the predecessor DMC-LZ7.

Intelligent Auto Technology
New LUMIX cameras not only prevents blurry, out-of-focus photos with one-touch ease, they also automatically select the optimal shooting mode, all thanks to Intelligent Auto Technology.

With LUMIX and Intelligent Auto Technology, it's easy for anyone to take great photos anytime, anywhere!

Intelligent Auto Technology is bascially the collective name for four detection and optimising functions which work together seemlessly and add up to perfect shots every time

Mega O.I.S.MEGA O.I.S.
MEGA O.I.S. uses built-in gyrosensors to detect even tiny camera movements and then shifts a lens in the opposite direction to compensate. The system is completely optical - it does not affect the CCD or image processing - so you get sharp, clear images without deterioration.

As MEGA O.I.S. compensates for handshake it also lets you shoot at shutter speeds slower than what you could use without it - which means the camera captures more light and is therefore able to take more atmospheric photos.

This helps achieve high-quality images in a wide range of shooting conditions as described below:

Sharper zoom shots
Taking shots with zoom accentuates even the slightest movement of the camera caused by hand shake. With MEGA O.I.S. you can take stable, un-blurred handheld high zoom pictures. It also gives the flexibility to use slower shutter speeds.

Clearer night shots
Using automatic flash at night can take the atmosphere out of the shot as the scene tends to be illuminated unnaturally. As MEGA O.I.S. allows the camera to take shots with slower shutter speeds this means more light can be taken in through the lens and thus capture the true atmosphere of your shot – without both tripod or handshake.

Brilliant Indoor Shots
Using a flash in low-light indoor conditions can bleach the foreground in unnatural light and darken the background. Again, the slower shutter speeds possible due to MEGA O.I.Ss coupled with the elimination of handshake allows you to capture the actual natural light conditions and create superbly atmospheric images.

Great Macro shots
Taking crisp, sharp close-ups requires a completely still camera. With OIS you can take stable, blur free handheld macro pictures. It also gives the flexibility to use slower shutter speeds.

ISOIntelligent ISO Control
Intelligent ISO Control detects whether or not the shooting subject is moving. If it is, the system automatically raises the ISO setting (that is, the light sensitivity of the CCD) accordingly, allowing the camera to shoot at a higher shutter speed thus preventing motion blur but also without compromising the quality and naturalness of the image.

After hand shake, the next most common cause of poor photos is "motion blur" which occurs when the shooting object moves just as it is being snapped. Accordingly, LUMIX has developed a unique Intelligent ISO Control which uses subject-motion detection circuitry inside the Venus Engine III processor to detect whether or not the subject is moving.

If it is, the system automatically raises the ISO setting accordingly, allowing the camera to shoot at a higher shutter speed thus preventing motion blur but also without compromising the quality and naturalness of the image. If the subject is not moving, the camera shoots at a low ISO setting and also captures beautiful, natural-looking images.

face detectionFace Detection
This new function detects faces anywhere in the frame and automatically chooses the optimal focus and exposure. It detects up to 15 faces in a photo, and automatically readjusts the settings if their positions change. In iA mode, the camera automatically begins focusing without even having to press the shutter button halfway, so you can catch even sudden photo opportunities.

When taking a photo the camera quickly determines if there are any people in the shot, and if it finds any automatically selects the optimal focus and exposure settings to ensure that you get super portraits. Furthermore it can detect up to fifteen faces in one scene so you can take a photo of even the entire rugby or football team in the confidence that you will get clear, crisp shots every time!

You also don't need to worry about missing those difficult to get photos. With the LUMIX Quick Auto Focus (AF) system, the camera is always scanning for people and adjusting its settings accordingly so it is not even necessary to press the shutter button halfway to focus - it is always ready! In fact the system is so advanced it will even track the position of people as they move around continually adjusting its settings as they move. All you have to do is just point and shoot!

Intelligent scene selectorIntelligent Scene Selector
When the camera's in iA mode, the Intelligent Scene Selector senses the ambient conditions and automatically selects either Scenery, Portrait, Macro, Night Portrait or Night Scenery mode accordingly. It makes several other advanced image settings too, so you're assured of getting beautiful results every time you shoot, no matter what the scene or subject.

With the Intelligent Scene Selector doing all the complicated work for you, you'll find photography easier than ever to enjoy.

So from now on all you have to do is turn the dial to "Intelligent Auto" mode and LUMIX automatically selects the optimum shooting mode and prevents all forms of blurring. Say good-bye to complicated settings, say hello to great photos!

5.0 out of 5 stars Well worth the money..., 11 Jul 2009
I purchased this (not from Amazon as it happens) to use when the bulk of my Sony Alpha 300 dSLR would get in the way (theme parks, long walks and the like).

I chose a lumix as I am a big fan of Panasonic products as I have had good experiences of them in terms of reliability and quality. Mine is the black version and looks quite classy and more expensive than it actually costs.

I have read reviews on other sites describing the styling as 'bland' - this is entirely a subjective issue - it looks just fine to me, like a 'proper' camera not a toy.

Initial impressions are the picture quality is good. It is a cinch to use just drop it into iAuto mode and the only thing you can mess up is the composition. However if you want to more creative and exercise more control much more manual control is available.

There are a couple of things that might be a deal breaker for some-

1 - LCD composition only, no viewfinder. Didn't bother me as I have a dSLR and just wanted a quick point and shoot for when I didn't want to carry a bulky dSLR.

2 - AA batteries - you do need to purchase some rechargeable batteries and charger as this could prove expensive if you used good quality non - rechargeable ones. Some shy away from camera's that take AA's due to battery life and prefer cameras with dedicated Li-on's. AA's have one big advantage, unless you are in the middle of nowhere with no shops you will never run out of battery power - just pop in the nearest shop and buy a couple of batteries, so even if you run down your spares you will not be stuck. I also already had a number of sets and charger due to another piece of kit I have that takes AA's.

This camera has a couple of really neat features worth a mention-

1 - The LCD can be put into overhead shot mode meaning you can still see the screen when using the camera to take a shot over an obstruction such as a crowd - neatly does away with the need for a tilting screen which my dSLR has.

2 - Q (for quick) menu. A dedicated menu button that gives access to recently used menu features. So say for example you change the mega pixel setting from 10 to 5 using the normal menu which takes a few presses when you want to change back to 10 you just press q menu and it's there ready just needing to be selected and changed.

I have quite big hands and find the buttons OK in terms of size and operation - no problems there at all.

If you want one of these you do need to move quickly - they are no longer in production and have been superseded hence they are around at a really great price or in some good value bundles.

    4.0 out of 5 stars A Perky Panasonic, 8 Jun 2009
By R. J. Brooker "pix" (Accrington, Lancashire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
    (REAL NAME)
This is a great little camera, small enough and light enough to slip in my pocket. Unlike many of its ilk it allows the user some control, with A (Aperture Priority), S (Shutter Priority) and M (manual) in addition to the Scene modes. The fact that it can shoot widescreen video is a plus.

The controls are a little small for those with big hands. As with most cameras at this price point the LCD is difficult to read in bright sunshine. The internal flash unit is also a little underpowered. It is fine for pictures in your living room but not for party pictures in a large hall.

The camera's menu system is OK except that one or two functions you might use every day are buried too deeply into the menus. The function to format the memory card takes 22 key presses.

The 5x zoom is great. Covering the 30mm to 150mm (35mm equiv) means it can capture a diverse type of subject matter, and its macro mode extends this even more.

The Panasonic DMC-LZ10 is now out of production but there are still some available at a good price. If you decide this is the camera for you then snap it up quickly.
