Product Description

Four Thirds Standard:Four Thirds is the answer to the uncompromising demands of professional photography. It represents a break from the past and frees digital SLR photography from the confines of conventional camera technology

Angle of View:When you use the lenses designed for 35mm film with digital camera bodies that incorporate sensors smaller than film there is the potential problem of a loss of wide-angle capability

When you use lenses designed for 35mm film with digital camera bodies that incorporate sensors smaller than film there is the potential problem of a loss of wide-angle capability

Four Thirds solves this phenomenon. As the lens if always fully optimised to suit the sensor, you don't have to contend with expensive wide-angle lenses that do not attain their intended specification - the angle of view you expect is the angle of view you get

The standard focal lens of the Four Thirds standard is around 25mm.So to compare for the 35mm format with a standard focal length of around 50mm, you have to use the factor 2 to have the angle of view compared (50mm = 100mm related to 35mm equivalent focal length)

Lens Resolution & Corner-shading:Because the medium of film is very tolerant, there was no need to equip lenses with very high resolving power in the past. But with digital sensors, this has changed

Conventional lens systems simply do not deliver the lens resolution necessary for electronic sensors. They often have a resolution of only around 10 microns. However, because modern multi-megapixel cameras often have a pixel pitch of just 5 or 6 microns or less, overlapping and quality losses are the result. Therefore, the full theoretical performance of the sensor cannot be used. The problem is exacerbated with a greater number of pixels and a smaller sensor size

All lenses designed for the Four Thirds standard ensure the image sensor is not left wanting. The ultra-fine resolution attained through special manufacturing processes guarantees full sensor performance

For Edge to Edge Clarity:All Four Thirds-optimised lenses feature so-called near telecentric optics

Due to the nature of the electronic sensor construction, image data is lost and there is a susceptibility to interference if light hits the pixels at a high angle of incidence. IT causes a situation called corner-shading, a loss in quality at the edge of the frame. This is associated particularly with cameras using full-format sensors, where lenses must spread the light widely to reach each corner

However, the near telecentric construction of lenses optimised for the Four Thirds standard ensures light hits the sensor at right-angles. This guarantees edge-to-edge colour, clarity and brightness

Standardisation:Four Thirds is a technological standard dedicated to the needs of digital SLR camera systems. It has been designed to maximise the performance of both image sensors and lenses. To achieve this, it sets definitive standards on three levels:Mechanical, Optical and Communication

Mechanical Standards:The type, size and shape of the bayonet mount and mount bore are standardised to permit lens inter-changeability. Also the distance between the focal plane and the lens flange surface (flange back) and the position of the image sensor in relation to the rear of the lens have been defined

Optical Standards: The Four Thirds Standard fixes the size of the image circle, i.e. the diameter of the circle projected by the lens onto the focal plane. The lens mount is roughly twice as big as the image circle, a feature necessary to allow the light to fall at almost perpendicular angles onto the entire image sensor via the near telecentric lens elements, thus virtually eliminating corner-shading

A Communication Standard:The lens and body are no longer separate entities. now, through the standardised communications protocol established by Four Thirds, the two can communicate and exchange information

An Open Standard:The Four Thirds standard has been deliberately designed as an open stnadard. That means the more body, lens and accessory manufacturers adopt the standard, the greater will be the degree of product compatibility. As a result, the range of equipment and options available to photographers will be greater

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Camera, 21 Jul 2008
By Dermot O'Sullivan (Dublin, Ireland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I am new to SLR cameras but wanted good camera as I am going on a 3 month trip early next year. I did a bit of research and I have had olympus cameras before so I decided to get the Olympus E420. I just went for weeks holiday and I brought the camera with me to get used to it. The camera is really easy to use and the quality of the pictures are second to none. Within the space of 5 minutes I was up and running. The controls are really simple to use. The auto focus feature allows you to point the camera, press auto focus and shoot. The camera has multple different scene selections that sets the different features such as flash intensitity, shutter speed etc... for you based to the different scene you select. These different scenes really make a difference to the pictures produced. All of these can be configured manually but I havnt got that far yet. The two lenses are again very eay to use as the auto focus does that last bit of focusing for you. (This can also be done manually). One of the main reasons why I went for this camera is that as when travelling for the 3 months I want a small camera and this camera is very neet and tidy and exactly what I want for my trip. I know I have only touched on the potential of this camera and have lots to learn but it has impressed me, so much so that I decided to write this review. So I would totally recommend this camera to a novice like myself who wants to learn how to use a slr camera.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unbeatable, 9 Sep 2008
By X (S.E. England) - See all my reviews
Sit down quietly with the specifications of this camera from the Olympus UK home-page on your screen, and read what this camera can do. Then you read these reviews, so that I can tell you that this camera does all of that, very well, and with ease. In fact, there are functions I may never use again, but it's there if you need it.

You don't have to be always on edge using it. Stick it in Auto or P (program) mode and fire away. It'll do the rest for you, without even the suggestion of not quite fulfilling its promise. Then just look at what you and your Olympus can do. For the next time, look at what the Olympus E420 has to offer, and try something a bit different. And so on. All good Olympus cameras seem to "grow" on the people who own them, and my first Olympus dates back to 1977.

And this is a "good" Olympus, which makes it a superb camera when compared with Brand-X. The build quality is impeccable, the functions are intuitive, as long as you don't try to run before you can walk, and the results are outstanding. It certainly will grow on you. I cannot imagine I will ever need more from a stills camera.

I bought mine in this bundle, with two zoom lenses, and I've added an Olympus flash, the FL-36, and an Olympus macro lens, the 35mm f3.5 macro, (which also doubles up as a fixed lens, for all purposes except "wide" applications.) Their integration into the E-series body is just perfect. If flash or macro photography are important to you, put in the money to buy these Olympus accessories. As soon as you use them you will be glad you didn't try for any short-cuts.

There are extra functions available on the E520, but that camera has all the characteristics that have got me enthusing in this E420. You pays your money and you takes your choice, but you enjoy your Olympus in either case.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Handy!, 17 Aug 2008
By S. P. Button "knoflik" (Nottingham, England.) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
My main camera is a Nikon D80 which I use with heavy lenses and a battery pack. I love it to bits, but found I was in need of something I could have with me at all times to capture those "moments" that always crop up when you DON'T have a camera to hand. I personally can't stand point-and-shoot cameras - not for any snob value, purely because I can't get on with them. I like a viewfinder.

The Olympus has liveview, so it's a useful tool for P&S fans, but I'm not a fan. The big thing about this camera is it's size, and the quality of the images it can produce. It's small enough to take everywhere, but big enough to function as an SLR. I'm just getting used to it, so I'm far from a whizz with it yet, but the key thing is that I LOVE taking it out with me and using it.

The pictures I've got out of the kit lens are pin-sharp, though there is a tendency for highlights to get blown a bit more than I'd like. The menu system takes a bit of getting used to after the Nikon, but it's far from being rocket science - it gets more intuitive the more you use it, and anyway there's nothing wrong with slowing down and thinking ahead before taking a picture.

For such a small camera it feels very solidly built (even more so than the D80).
Highly recommended!
