Product Description

Product Description

Many journalists and reporters have the Ricoh GR Digital II in their bag because this camera always delivers the intended results! The Ricoh GR Digital II is loaded with jaw-dropping technologies, including a fixed 28 mm focal length (35 mm equivalent) and a huge aperture of 2.4, allowing you to seize even the tiniest details with ease in the worst lighting conditions. Two aspheric glass elements are built into the lens for sharper images in a compact size. The GRD II's sensor includes 10 megapixels to retain definition and capture pictures in RAW format with a magnification ratio of 1:1. Meanwhile, the GR Engine II processor is another source of the GRD II's high image quality, allowing you to shoot photos at high sensitivity settings without concerns over loss of definition or blur. The GR Digital II is even equipped with an electronic level function, enabling the user to see if the camera is level by looking at the LCD screen. What's more, the GRD II's solid magnesium body means you can use it in even extreme conditions. Get onto the road with the GR Digital II!

5.0 out of 5 stars A handy sketch book camera for pros, 20 Feb 2008
I like this camera a lot. It can be set for three essentials I really need: instant shutter response, excellent optical viewfinder (not shown in the photo, can be attached to the flash shoe) and raw files for post processing.

It does have some noise -- pretty typical of small sensor cameras -- once the ISO starts to be raised. I often use it in B&W because that cuts out colour noise and the luminance noise looks more like grain. I am okay with that. I have photos that I would not otherwise have and they are still more acceptable to me than what I get with other P&S cameras.

Under good conditions the Ricoh can produce some stunning images, particularly due to the corner-to-corner sharpness of the lens and very good colour rendition. Under marginal conditions it suffers, but still performs well for its class. It is small enough to keep in my brief case so I have it with me all the time. Sean Reid (www.reidreviews.com -- a great site and well worth the subscription) suggests such a camera should be thought of as an artist's sketch book - something you always have with you for quickly penciling an idea, but not for painting a masterpiece. I find that a really attractive notion.

Maybe I should have waited for the Sigma DP1 which is also a fixed 28mm focal length. But life is short and in any case that camera is a subtly different proposition all over again. Thanks Ricoh for a quality product and a lot of fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spectacular iconoclast camera -- eats the competition. Is it for you?, 25 Nov 2008
By John-Paul May (Europe) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This camera is not for everyone:

IT HAS ***NO*** ZOOM LENS.

For anyone who knows anything about photography, that is a blessing. Yes, this is actually a digicam with a superb REAL, FIXED-LENGTH, PRIME LENS. Photography is about the lens, and this lens is fantastic, it blows away the laughable "zoom" lenses fitted to cheapie feature-driven digicams.

Ricoh's old-days film camera, the GR, was an eccentric compact -- fixed lens -- film camera; extremely solidly made and simple. It was the sort of camera a professional photographer might throw in their pocket for taking snapshots when away from their studio equipment.

Really, the digital GR is the same deal. It's not for everyone. But more people should try one. If you use a GR you won't be wasting your brain cells worrying about a stupid, stupid (and low quality) "zoom" lens, you'll be concentrating on making great photos.

Think about it - be eccentric and cool. Don't buy a stupid "zoom-lens" kiddie digital camera. Buy one of these Ricoh GR. Some of your friends will think you're silly because you "don't have a zoom." Your yuppy friends will be bitterly jealous that you have by far the best made camera for snapshots - it's all matte black stealth and hard materials. And if you cross paths with any working professional photographers, they'll know you have a clue.

The only other digicam with a real prime lens for high quality results, is an equally iconoclastic Sigma model.

Enjoy!

3.0 out of 5 stars Noise, 6 Oct 2009
By E. Kuscu - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Lots of noise. No anti shake feature either resulting blurred photos and not so useful when used indoors. Otherwise a fine tiny camera with advanced almost SLR like manual features.
If you are thinking of getting just this camera instead of SLR you will miss loads of image quality as nowadays the cheapest d-SLR will way surpass the quality and ISO sensitivity of this tiny thing. But it is tiny and very portable and still deserves respect for the size/functionality aspects and gives acceptable images outdoors when there is a lot of light.
