What You See - Is What You Usually Get - excellence, 21 Feb 2008
I bought this camera in mid January - been using it daily on way to / from work. For over a year, i've been tracking the powershot S3 IX, and would of purchased at a lowish price, but, as it's not as compact as this SX100, it would not fit in my pocket, and would have limited use against my Digital SLR - Nikon D40 .
This camera is very good in most areas.
Flash photography - is not it's strongest point, since recycle times are not as fast as you might expect, but where this camera really excels is in non-flash pictures, especially night time shots, with the fast ISO settings (usually left on 400) , you can capture the glory of London at night, in excellent colour. It's opened up a new dimension for me, after 26 years of photography; pocket sized available light camera.
Battery life is excellent, you can take over 200 pics with AA rechargeable (2300 mA) .
The user interface is top class, very easy to use; I haven't opened the manual - no need to .. yet. It has a scroll wheel to whizz through images, change ISO settings etc, so one handed operation is very easy.
Oh - and the 10x optical is very handy for bringing the subject closer, this works effortlessly, from the index finger.
The shutter release is a soft touch, so less chance of camera shake etc.
There's a image stitch feature, common on some other Canon cameras, which i've yet to experiment with - looks well handy.
I can fully recommend this camera, and unusually, I won't be ebaying this anytime soon, unless they bring out another model, with lightning fast flash recycle times...

Excellent priced Hi spec Canon compact, 1 April 2008
Purchased this camera as a snapper when i can,t be bothered with my DSLR.
Features i wanted were a powerfull zoom, abilty to put a camera in my Jeans pocket ,wide angle, viewfinder ,manual controls, and good pics straight out of the box !! After much internet hunting discovered this camera does,nt really exist.
Walked into a large electrical retailer one day for something else and saw the Canon 100SX and thought lets have a look.
For starters it fits in my Jean pockets etc altho a bit of a squeeze but too be honest the really small compacts just don,t do it 4 me they seem very shiny and slippery and in my book easy to drop or even lose !
The canon handles very nicely and you really feel like your using a proper camera, build is good 2 but then thats normal for a canon.
User interface is so easy as well and has lots of really good features you might find in some DSLRs .
Zoom has a usefull 1.6 and 2 x multiplier if you don,t mind dropping down to 3 MEG every now and again.
Screen is pretty decent and does,nt dominate like the screen obsessed compacts from other brands.
Good for composing and viewing.
Pics are very nice straight out of the box and the exposure and white balance i found to be very very good.
The big drawback of this camera is the very pedestian flash recyce time about 8 secs, this is very slow but what i will say is that it does produce very good photos of people with the flash in conditions that require it.
But i would not class this camera as a indoor down the pub, someones birthday party type of camera so not a problem 4 me regarding the slow flash.
lastly i mentioned that i wanted wide angle zoom and a viewfinder and of course this camera does not have these but it ticked most of the other boxes very well so to conclude if you want a camera with a powerfull zoom, stacks of manual features (Enthusiast on a budget ?) and can fit in your pocket this should be it and Canon lets face really know how to make proper cameras(not biased have a Olympus DSLR)
Would be great if they would come out with a 28mm wide zoom one day.

Powershot SX100is Black, 23 Mar 2008
I did a fair amount of looking around before settling on this camera, I started by looking at the ixus range, but really wanted a camera which allowed manual use - the ixus range is fantastic, but has limited manual use.
I looked firstly at the powershot A720, and though the camra was superior pound for pound over the ixus in terms of optical zoom, settings, etc, it fell down in that it didn't have the quality "feel" of the ixus - it felt "plasticky" and cheap to me.
Then I came across the SX100, it is not made of metal, but doesn't have the cheap feel of the other powershot cameras, it looks and feels well made. For 150 quid it has 8mp res and a massive 10x optical zoom, you can set the iso from 80 all up to 1600. It has aperture priority (f2.8-f8), shutter priority(15"-1/2500) and can even be fully manual, you can set white balance and it even has a manual focus setting. Together with other settings like stich assist, night scene and auto, it is a very versatile camera, I don't think you'll do much better without going to a DSLR.
The screen is large enough to use comfortably, though I would have liked a view finder as well.
I feel that flash photography lets it down, though I hope that as I learn more about photography, and get more skilled at manipulating the settings, use of the flash will see better results. But even with it's limitations - you hardly need flash, it takes such good shots even in low light!
All in all - a great little number!
