Canon introduces the latest evolution of the IXUS range of digital cameras for style-conscious digital photographers: the Canon Digital IXUS 860 IS. Equipped with a 28mm (35mm equivalent) 3.8x wide-angle zoom lens with optical Image Stabilizer, the 8.0 Megapixel Canon Digital IXUS 860 IS is the successor to the hugely popular Canon Digital IXUS 850 IS. The Canon Digital IXUS 860 IS digital camera offers a range of enhancements over its acclaimed predecessor. These include a 3.0? PureColor LCD and improved Face Detection Technology. The Canon IXUS 860 IS high ISO capabilities work in tandem with an optical Image Stabilizer lens to significantly reduce the risk of image blur. Optical Image Stabilizer Helping the photographer capture more from group shots, landmarks and landscapes, the 3.8x wide-angle lens of the Canon IXUS 860 IS has a focal length of 28-105mm (35mm equivalent). The lens system incorporates Canon?s lens-shift type optical Image Stabilizer (IS) - first developed in EF lenses for Canon?s market leading EOS system of professional D-SLR cameras and lenses - to counteract camera shake. Very pleased with this, the other reviews about say it all really.
There is so much in such a small package!
My only concern was not having a viewfinder, but this turned out to be totally unfounded as the large, bright 3" screen is still viewable in direct sunlight thanks to a blue anti-glare coating. You can also hold in the Disp. button to temporarily set the display to max brightness.

Seems better value than the 960 as the display is bigger and its 12MP sensor causes more noise in low light. Megapixels aren't everything these days. Having the 28mm wide angle is extremely useful too.

I can also highly recommend the tiny Lowepro Apex 10 AW for this camera as a great outdoor case with beltclip and room for a spare battery and cards.

I bought this camera because it has a 28mm (equivalent) wide angle setting. The other cameras I looked at with this setting - Ricoh and Panasonic - all had 'issues' in user reviews which put me off considering them.

Advantages include: a large screen with 230,000 pixels which is good even on a bright day; the Digic III processor which seems to me to give pictures that litle bit sharper than Digic II; a usable digital zoom when set at the 1.5x setting (at any rate, it is sharper than the similar setting on the Powershot A710 IS); an excellent movie mode - though you can't zoom in and out once you have started shooting; macro mode with Digital Setting - via the FUNC button - gets closer than the 3cm stated in the User Guide; and I found the 'Foliage' scene mode particularly useful for woodland photography.

The ISO settings have a separate button with access to a High ISO auto which will automatically compensate for darker scenes. As you might expect, noise increases.

You cannot change the shutter or aperture settings, but I have not found this to be a problem so far, as the scene settings cover most needs. There is no Sports setting, but "Kids and Pets" seems to fill the bill.

Shot-to-shot speed is so fast I have not found the need to use the Continuous setting so far.

Battery life is excellent. Another triumph for Canon!

I have just brought this camera. I upgraded from a Sony T9. This camera is excellent. Have had it 2 weeks now, I have taken some great shots. They say the camera doesnt take good pictures its the person behind it.
Well, it is true but having this camera in your hands certainly helps.

Shots in low light are fantastic, very clear even when using the digital zoom. The camera has 3.8 Optital zoom then the digital zoom takes over. This is the best digital zoom I have seen on a camera. Captures the shot perfectly.

The wide angle lens works perfectly, again compared to other models offering similar spec the quality of this lens makes it stand out from the rest. There is very little sound as the lens adjusts, focus is quick and accurate, it captures detail very well in all conditions.

The 3inch LCD screen is spot on, displays pictures and makes them look better than in real life. Displays the colours, contrast very well.

I was not expecting a lot from Video capture function, but again, as with everything else this function was excellent. Footage is smooth, sound is recreated perfectly, there was no blurred image or jerky effects as I filmed my daughter running around in her walker.

The built in red eye reduction actually seems to work in a lot of the shots that are taken, there is also a feature that allows you to remove any red eye in shots that slip through the net. This isnt perfect and isnt guaranteed to remove all instance of red eye but it did a decent job in the images I have used it on to date.

There is a touch sensitive function "wheel" which is handy but if you dont like it it cant still be used in the conventional way.

The only downside I can think of is that the camera is a little bulky compared to the Sony cameras but to be honest that is being very picky.
It still fits comfortably into pockets, for the performance you get

I played around with the new Sony cameras and the Ricoh R7. They just do not compare to this camera.

Forget the mega pixel war, this camera takes better images than the 12 mp models that are currently being released. This has the perfect balance between megapixels, optics and quick software.
Both this and the 950 are excellent, for me the wide angle lens on this model makes it stand out from the crowd.

If you are looing for a new digital compact camera, this is the one for you.
