I am writing this review because I just cannot agree with the reviewers giving low scores - maybe their cameras are faulty.

I am not new to digital photography - this camera is a replacement for my previous Fuji MX1700, which was new in the last millennium (in 1999) and cost four times the price of this one.

This camera is smaller and lighter than the previous one. The MX1700 has an optical viewfinder as well as an LCD screen and is really solidly built, but in every other respect the F480 seems better or as good.

Unlike one other reviewer, I have had no 'blurry and speckled' pictures. The 'auto mode' seems to produce good pictures for me, and the specialist modes I have tried such as baby or fireworks produced good images (of babies/toddlers and fireworks respectively).

I have not had a problem with battery life. The battery has to be removed from the camera for charging, so the camera cannot be used while the battery is charging. An AC adapter and DC coupler are listed as 'sold separately' in the manual.

This camera is exceptional in having a wide angle lens equivalent to 28mm for a 35mm camera, whereas most digital cameras only offer the equivalent of a 35mm wide angle. This is a big difference and may account for the report of 'washed out' (like a corpse) flash photos as it is easy to get near to the subject. The camera is easy to use, but not 'fool proof'. Of course, it may be that the two reviewers giving one star did have cameras that were faulty, or that they had their cameras set to an inappropriate mode for the images they were taking.

The zoom is 4x, compared with 3x for most competitors in the same price bracket. The extra is at the wide angle end of the zoom. The telephoto as about the same as most other cameras, but the image is 8MP so it is possible to crop the image to get the equivalent of a bigger telephoto while keeping a reasonable resolution on the image.

I did not try comparing the results of this camera with others before buying, I am satisfied with my purchase: it is easily worth 100 pounds (the 'list' price from Boots of 200 pounds is ludicrous though).

Quite unquantifiable for Fuji - we all know their cameras are usually amongst the fastest and produce excellent pictures even at very low light levels. Their cameras are usually brilliant value for money, their sensors producing more useable pixels with larger pictures than competing models.

My experience (6 weeks) with this camera is that, if nothing else, the sensor is unreliable; exposure varies widely and white balance is unstable (slightly different colour cast) even under similar conditions. It's sufficiently unreliable as to make me not want to use it. Honestly, you could pick up almost any other compact digital camera and be more confident in it. I have to agree with the reviewer who wrote that this camera is 'not fit for the purpose'. I've sent mine back to Fuji UK, and upon it's return Fuji engineers say 'it appears to be working normally'. Oh dear.

Looking at the reviews there must be a proportion of good working models and a proportion of sub-standard releases. Sadly I felt mine to be quite poor.

Other than the low frame size in movie mode the specification for this camera is quite outstanding, if only it could have delivered on it. I found the following:

Images suffered from softness, digital noise, very susceptible to movement blurring no matter what ISO or AUTO/Semi Auto setting the camera was set to. It produced poor images indoors and out doors.

The shutter lag (time from pressing the shutter release to the image being taken) was also poor along with the time the camera took between shots to process the image.

Battery life was average and the flash was weak, I also found it easy to inadvertently have your finger obscure the flash when holding the camera; in fact the only good thing on the camera was its 2.7" screen!

I won't continue in covering the camera's specification or ergonomics, as this is not a product I could recommend.

Other reviewers seem to have had pleasing results but I'm afraid I did not. A great shame as the camera is quite unique in having a very wide-angle lens that very few other cameras have. I have also had a Fuji F11 compact camera in the past, which was a tremendous little camera.

I have since returned this camera and spent a little more money and bought a Canon IXUS 75, which has delivered fantastic results.

If I you are considering buying this camera I would strongly recommend that you audition it first, next to possible alternatives such as the Canon IXUS 75, IXUS 70 or indeed some of the other Fuji compacts that have received favourable reviews. If you if you did find a Fuji F480 you were happy with then it would be a camera with a great specification for the money.
