I only got this today..., 20 Oct 2007
...but it was recommended to me by the guy in Jessops, and he seemed to know what he was talking about! (He couldn't decide whether he was going to buy this one or another) This was at a higher price there but had just been reduced to this price. My boyfriend said Ricoh are a big name in larger cameras, but I'd never heard of them. Apparently they've been around for 70 years. They showed me some A4 photos they'd taken on it too and they were really bright and sharp.
I just wanted a fairly compact (to fit a small, girly handbag on a night out) camera, of a good quality brand, with more than 3x optical zoom. I couldn't find any good brands, only ones I'd never have linked with cameras, that did 5 or 7x zoom in a compact, then saw this! It's quite small and neat, with an impressive lens that protrudes the front of the camera in a way that's hard to believe it fits inside! It's a little noisy and whirry, but has a really large screen and so far seems great! (No eye piece though) It zooms and focuses really well and is simple to use. Just push the lever left or right to zoom in/out (x7 optical zoom is a lot for a compact camera!), gently press the shutter button to focus, then press right down to take the photo. Press the "play" arrow button to see your taken photos, then again to go back to shooting pictures.
It also comes with it's lithium-ion battery (which I've been told are the longer lasting type) and a charger for it, so if you have a spare battery you can charge it up while the camera's using the other.
Only downsides so far are that on the little up/down/left/right arrows the left arrow is a little fiddly to get to if you have a girly thumb nail, but it's not too bad. Also you need to buy an SD memory card for it though, but then you can buy any brand SD card and whatever memory size you want, and will probably have this problem with most cameras, or they'll come with a small card). It does have a little internal memory. Also, the protruding lens seems as though it may be a little fragile if you dropped it, but I'm not planning to try that out yet! (It also comes with a wrist strap).
This camera has the best spec. and reputation that I could find for the money!
I've not explored all the menus yet though...

Great manual features, good pictures, 6 Aug 2008
I bought this camera to replaced a lost Canon Ixus.
Good points:
Large optical zoom in a compact body.
Good level of manual control (focus, exposure, white balance etc.)
Quick operation
Quality of pictures
Bad Points:
Tendency for the software to over expose and under saturate. Easily adjusted with basic tools, but annoying.
Auto focus sometimes struggles with bright/multiple subjects
Noisy operation (didn't bother me, but may bother others).
The video mode is a mixed bag. In normal operation, the sounds are quite muffled and the microphone not directional. Where it has excelled, though, is in rock concerts as it does not distort or mute the sound as many cameras do. The focus in video mode could be better.
Overall, a very good, if not great, camera. Ideal as a point and shoot with enough manual control to be able to make a difference.
