Product Description

Description

Roots revivalist Corey Harris continues his ambitious exploration of musical history with ZION CROSSROADS, a project that finds Harris immersed in the rhythms and consciousness oftraditional roots reggae. Unlike Harris's previous efforts, however, which blend country blues with jazz, Americana, and African styles, ZION CROSSROADS sticks closely to its genre, riding deep, dread rhythms in a manner that recalls Burning Spear and Black Uhuru. The exceptions are the African-inflected "Walter Rodney" and the straight country tune "Plantation Town". The overall result is a satisfying, groove-driven album heightened by a political consciousness that will appeal to Harris fans as well as to classic roots reggae enthusiasts.

1.0 out of 5 stars Below expectations, 28 April 2008
This was my fourth CD by Corey Harris. I had previously bought 'Between Midnight and Day' (1995), 'Fish ain't bitin'(1997),'Mississippi to Mali' (2003). I had to a greater or lesser extent enjoyed them all hence my purchase of this one.
I'm sorry but this was just poor reggae which was some journey from his blues roots. This CD is self indulgency of the worst kind. Perhaps I should have expected this after his attempt at world music (Mississippi to Mali). Fortunately someone must have advised him to drop that idea. I just hope for his sake that he drops the reggae even quicker. It's too late for me. I shan't be buying any more of his offerings.
