Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

Panasonic prides itself on being at the forefront of technology and the introduction of the DMC-FX30, a 7 Megapixel, 2.5 inch LCD Screen, 28mm lens and 3.6x Zoom, the world's slimmest digital camera with 28mm wide-angle lens, is a case in point. The perfect camera that fits into any lifestyle, the ultra slim FX30 offers sophistication in technology and style, whilst remaining inherently easy to use.

The bigger picture with the LEICA DC wide angle lens..

This new lens allows photographers to easily capture a large group of people, or expansive architectural structures and landscapes with dynamic width and rich perspective. The lens part of the DMC-FX30 comprises of seven elements in six groups, including five lenses with six aspherical surfaces to generate high optical performance. The zoom ratio can be extended up to 5.3x in 3megapixel resolution mode with minimal deterioration thanks to the Extra Optical Zoom. By using the central part of the CCD, this powerful zooming function allows you to easily capture and magnify distant subjects.

Blurred images are a thing of the past thanks to Panasonic!
Panasonic is the first manufacturer to have successfully incorporated Optical Image Stabiliser (OIS) into its compact cameras - a feature strongly appreciated worldwide and now considered to be a standard requirement of photography. O.I.S minimizes the jitter from shaky hands that causes many photos to look blurred by shifting the O.I.S lens unit to keep the optical axis aligned straight against the CCD, to ensure images are captured with supreme clarity and sharpness.

The Venus Engine III
The DMC-FX30 features the Venus Engine III, Panasonic?s advanced image-processing engine that can record at a sensitivity setting as a high as ISO 1250 at full resolution. Noise reduction is also greatly improved, with picture noise removed in stages during image processing. Critical noise is analysed, and chromatic and luminance noise are reduced separately. The chromatic noise, which has greater effect on picture quality, is then selectively suppressed, resulting in clearer images.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cracking compact, 21 Jan 2008
Update : 21st May 2008...
Just ended up with 130+ flippin good photos from a holiday in Cornwall. No duffers as such - apart from my sometimes wayward composition technique that is! No duffers - and that's with shooting in just about every imaginable set of conditions - blue sky, cloudy, inland fields / greenery etc, coastal cliffs, villages/towns, beach scenes etc. I'm even more impressed with this little camera the more I use it. The exposure meter is mostly spot on but what I tend to do now is to use the exposure compensation button more (so easy to do) if I see that the taken picture looks a little bright on the camera screen. I mostly just go for -1/3 stop but occasionally -2/3 stop if there are some really bright highlights and the pic overall can take -2/3 stop. Try it yourself, shooting identical pics at std exposure and -1/3 stop and -2/3 stop. Then take a look at them on your laptop to see the effects on colour saturation etc. If you're unsure of what looks right, you can usually ensure a spot-on exposure by checking on the camera display for what appears to be a natural skin tone (assuming there are people in the photo that is). So glad I bought this camera. It really is a cracker.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I bought this camera on the strength of it winning the "Best Consumer Compact 2007" in What Digital Camera magazine. I wanted a very compact camera which was well made and which also produced good quality pictures via a high quality wide angle lens.

And that is what I got - good quality pictures - and the camera itself is beautifully made, incl a Leica 28-100mm lens (perfect for landscapes and short tele work). Beautifully made? How many cameras can you say that about these days? It's a joy to use too. The menu system is dead easy - I only read the manual out of academic interest in the end (but of course that's the way to get the best out of it). Picture quality is very good indeed for a compact digital, especially so given the tiny size of the sensor in these types of cameras (compared to DSLRs). No complaints from me - I was very pleasantly surprised.

I've taken a string of indoor and outdoor shots on this camera and find viewing them on my laptop very satisfying indeed. What I mean is that I'm enjoying the picture rather than being distracted by any apparent lack of picture quality (which there isn't). And I say this as someone who also regularly shoots using a Canon 400D DSLR attached to the new Canon 70-200 F4L IS, a combination which delivers amazing image quality. However, if you want really bitingly sharp image quality then buy a DSLR and be sure to buy the best (sharpest) lens you can afford so as to do the sensor justice.

It's a case of you pays your money and takes your choice as far as the compact vs DSLR argument goes - but this is one cracking compact camera that delivers great results which surely 99% of people would happily enjoy. I'm not surprised it picked up its What Digital Camera magazine award. I'm very glad I bought it.

Very highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a marvellous little camera!, 11 Mar 2008
By John Knottenbelt "jknotten2" (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
My Casio exilim gave me endless trouble, so I decided to try something else, but budget was an issue. I got this little camera on Amazon for less than £100 - you will be surprised at the quality you get! There is a Leica 3.6x wide angle zoom lens, an unexpected bonus at this price and places it well ahead of similar cameras. The wide angle means you can take inside a room and see the whole room, also especially useful for shots of people at a dinner table. 3.6 x zoom is adequate for most purposes. Startup is really quick, menu and controls are really easy (roll wheel) as well as intuitive and reviews of the last photo are at the touch of a button. Pictures are bright, intelligent iso setting means you can take in dim light without a flash (which my grandchildren hate) without losing too much quality. The anti-blur feature doesn't really do much in dim light, but outdoors it is excellent. Viewing screen is lovely, the only thing missing really is an optical viewfinder, but hey you can't have everything!
I can recommend this camera as a really good buy. I was going to use it as an interim solution before saving up for a bigger one, but am not going to do that now, this one will do me for a while yet!

1.0 out of 5 stars Why does it take so long to ship?, 13 Mar 2008
By Gee (Northern Ireland) - See all my reviews
I bought this camera 3 weeks ago and paid for 1st class postage, so expected it to be dispatched in a couple of days. My order is still showing as shipment date 26th March despite being advertised as "in stock". This looks to be a great little camera but if you are looking for something in a hurry you might want to look elsewhere...
