Product Description

Product Description
Image Stabilisation:For razor sharp pictures, the image stabiliser (IS) corrects image blur caused by handshake even in low-light conditions and with high focal lengths

The image stabiliser works using breakthrough SWD technology, acheiving a correction effect of up to 4 EV steps

The E-510 incorporates two IS modes for different occasions. It even allows sports pictures to be captured while still correcting the handshake

Because the IS system is built into hte camera body, all lenses of the Four Thirds System are stabilised

Live View:The comfort and flexibility of continuous live previews shown directly on the HyperCrystal LCD is available to digital SLR users for the first time. This ground-breaking innovation enables framing of shots without the need to look through the viewfinder. Users can therefore see what's going on around them while they shoot and also use the camera in situations where it is difficult to frame using the viewfinder - e.g. above the head or below the waist.

The Live View function incorporated in the E-410 and E-510 displays the information required for photography on the rear-panel LCD monitor:MF, exposure correction and white balance can all be adjusted more intuitively, as they can be viewed on the LCD monitor. This also enhances the camera's mobility and flexibility.

High image quality 10 Megapixel Live MOS Sensor: The newly-developed Live MOS sensor ensures superb image quality even of fine details

An energy-efficient technology, the Live MOS sensor reduces battery consumption and heat development and thereby pleases the photographer with a minimum of noise while ensuring maximum performance.

Dust reduction system; Dust is a serious problem for DSL-R cameras. With every lens change, tiny dust particles enter the camera body and can settle on the sensor. Subsequent photographs are affected and need to be retouched. The Supersonic Wave Filter from Olympus ensures worry-free operation

This unique dust reduction system delivers strong ultra-sonic vibrations to clean the sensor. The pictures will be spotless at all times. After all, a photographer's job is hard enough worrying about aperture and shutter speed!

HyperCrystal LCD for perfect viewing:On the HyperCrystal LCD th images can be viewed comfortably straight-on, from below, above or the side. 176º viewing angles ensure visibility in extreme shooting conditions

It provides a clear view - even in bright sunshine

Four Thirds - a forward-looking standard:Four Thirds is a completely new standard devised for the specific requirements of digital imaging

Lens and camera construction are based on a mechanical, optical and data exchange standard, allowing for impressively-high aperture lenses, fantastic image quality and an extremely compact form

The Four Thirds Standard ensure compatibility with components from different manufacturers for a broad range of equipment and the greatest flexibility.

Four Thirds Standard:Four Thirds is the answer to the uncompromising demands of professional photography. It represents a break from the past and frees digital SLR photography from the confines of conventional camera technology.

Angle of View:When you use the lenses designed for 35mm film with digital camera bodies that incorporate sensors smaller than film there is the potential problem of a loss of wide-angle capability.

When you use lenses designed for 35mm film with digital camera bodies that incorporate sensors smaller than film there is the potential problem of a loss of wide-angle capability.

Four Thirds solves this phenomenon. As the lens if always fully optimised to suit the sensor, you don't have to contend with expensive wide-angle lenses that do not attain their intended specification - the angle of view you expect is the angle of view you get.

The standard focal lens of the Four Thirds standard is around 25mm.So to compare for the 35mm format with a standard focal length of around 50mm, you have to use the factor 2 to have the angle of view compared (50mm = 100mm related to 35mm equivalent focal length).

Lens Resolution & Corner-shading:Because the medium of film is very tolerant, there was no need to equip lenses with very high resolving power in the past. But with digital sensors, this has changed.

Conventional lens systems simply do not deliver the lens resolution necessary for electronic sensors. They often have a resolution of only around 10 microns. However, because modern multi-megapixel cameras often have a pixel pitch of just 5 or 6 microns or less, overlapping and quality losses are the result. Therefore, the full theoretical performance of the sensor cannot be used. The problem is exacerbated with a greater number of pixels and a smaller sensor size.

All lenses designed for the Four Thirds standard ensure the image sensor is not left wanting. The ultra-fine resolution attained through special manufacturing processes guarantees full sensor performance.

For Edge to Edge Clarity:All Four Thirds-optimised lenses feature so-called near telecentric optics.

Due to the nature of the electronic sensor construction, image data is lost and there is a susceptibility to interference if light hits the pixels at a high angle of incidence. IT causes a situation called corner-shading, a loss in quality at the edge of the frame. This is associated particularly with cameras using full-format sensors, where lenses must spread the light widely to reach each corner.

However, the near telecentric construction of lenses optimised for the Four Thirds standard ensures light hits the sensor at right-angles. This guarantees edge-to-edge colour, clarity and brightness.

Standardisation:Four Thirds is a technological standard dedicated to the needs of digital SLR camera systems. It has been designed to maximise the performance of both image sensors and lenses. To achieve this, it sets definitive standards on three levels:Mechanical, Optical and Communication.

Mechanical Standards:The type, size and shape of the bayonet mount and mount bore are standardised to permit lens inter-changeability. Also the distance between the focal plane and the lens flange surface (flange back) and the position of the image sensor in relation to the rear of the lens have been defined.

Optical Standards: The Four Thirds Standard fixes the size of the image circle, i.e. the diameter of the circle projected by the lens onto the focal plane. The lens mount is roughly twice as big as the image circle, a feature necessary to allow the light to fall at almost perpendicular angles onto the entire image sensor via the near telecentric lens elements, thus virtually eliminating corner-shading.

A Communication Standard:The lens and body are no longer separate entities. now, through the standardised communications protocol established by Four Thirds, the two can communicate and exchange information.

An Open Standard:The Four Thirds standard has been deliberately designed as an open stnadard. That means the more body, lens and accessory manufacturers adopt the standard, the greater will be the degree of product compatibility. As a result, the range of equipment and options available to photographers will be greater.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent little camera, 27 Mar 2008
By Mr. S. Wilkins "Ixon" (Wigan) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Having been a Canon user for sometime now ie 350 & 400D, I decided to give a 4/3 camera a try.

So after reading loads of reviews the Olympus E-510 is the one i went for and ive not been dissapointed one little bit.

To start off with it has tons of features like live view, built in body IS, anti dust system ect plus you can use either XD or compact flash or both together, also a biggy for me is spot metering 3 different types to boot aswell, eh Canon only just finally decided to add this to it's overpriced 450D.

Another good thing with this camera is the supplied 14-42mm & 40-150mm both very well built & very very good optics considering they kit lenses, & the pictures this camera can produce are nothing short of excellent ISO noise control is also very good.

Another plus with 4/3 cameras is it 2x so if you invest in say a 300mm lens it becomes 600mm very handy.

Now onto the viewfinder loads of reviews said the viewfinder was small but to be honest it's not that small similar to the 400D just more square.

All in all you get alot of features for your money with the E-510 for a very good price & if your condsidering getting your first DSLR I would easily recommend the Olympus E-510.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb camera!, 11 Aug 2007
By Mr. C. Mcculloch "Calum" (Ayrshire, Scotland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Had one since June, with the standard kit lens. Optics superb, very sharp. Colours great straight from the camera. No fringing,
Image stabilisation works great (1-2 stops extra). Dust filter works great - never seen any dust on any images.
Handling great - just the right feel, weight and balance. Very light weight with kit lens.
Images slightly soft, easily fixed by setting the camera to Low Noise Filter and Sharpening to -1 to get the best RAW images.
Aperture of f3.5-f5.6 not as wide as some (comparable to other kit lenses) - can get a wider standard zoom but more expensive. The Image Stabilisation lets you take shots at lower shutter speed though. Build quality good, except the card cover appears flimsy.

5.0 out of 5 stars EVOLT-ution, 21 Jul 2007
By S. M. Brown (Wigan, Greater Manchester) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
There was no competition between the Olympus E510, Canon EOS series and the Nikon D80x... the Olympus E510 won hands down. A beautiful camera with great functions such as Image Stabilisation, a Dust reduction system (SSWF- Super-Sonic Wave Filter) and Live View, it has everything the amateur and professional photographer could want. Having previously used only digital cameras I have found it fairly straight forward to configure. It is quite lightweight (for an DSLR) and the image quality is vividly breathtaking. I would recommend getting the double lens kit to start with rather than the single lens 14-42mm to take full advantage of this cameras capabilities. The Canon EOS series and Nikon's are seriously lagging behind the E-510 and for the additional 'must have' features it is worth the extra pounds.
