5.0 out of 5 stars Ricoh Caplio R5, 14 Feb 2007
By Mr. C. H. Tresham "lastmilehome" (Coulsdon, Surrey) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The new Caplio R5 from Ricoh is a little lightweight gem with great features, mostly menu driven. The wide angle lens put it a step ahead of most of the competition, great for group and scenic shots without stitching. Picture quality is also excellent, bright and crisp, without the preponderance of red seen in other makes. An excellent LCD, with varying contrast options, and a good battery will see out a days shooting easily.Video capibilities are also excellent. The anti-shake correction features also result in a higher percentage of clear and crisp pictures. The ideal ISO setting is 100 and it's best to change the setting from AUTO. This is literally a one-handed-shooting camera, extremely lightweight, and comparatively quiet. 7.1 megapixels and 7 x optical zoom is about the industry benchmark now for compact digital cameras. Don't expect excellent results indoors because of the not-so-powerful flash but it works fine in brightly lit rooms. Unfortunately small cameras usually have below average flashes.
When it comes to digital cameras small is definately more sexy and the girls will love this one!

2.0 out of 5 stars A little disappointed...., 3 Dec 2007
By Mrs. K. E. Grimmond - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The Ricoh Caplio R5 is a super camera that takes super pictures....so why am I a bit disappointed? I have owned this camera for a total of 8 months......

After 3 months of (very careful) ownership, I went to use the camera, only to find that it wouldn't focus on ANYTHING...so off to the manufacturers for a repair....5 weeks later it is returned in good working order.

Another 5 months later, I find myself back at the menders yet again. I went to use the camera, turned the camera on only to find the lens came out and was completely stuck and there was no display on the LCD screen.

Hence my disappointment. Don't get me wrong, I have taken some wonderful photos on this camera but I will now always take a back up camera on holiday with me as I don't feel I can rely on it :-( I have other digital camera - a rather excellent Canon with a large zoom but not so impressive on the pixel front - this camera is 5 years old and has never needed a single repair. Buyer beware.

2.0 out of 5 stars a disappointment, 25 Feb 2008
By J. Smith (uk) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I bought this camera in November 2006 after much careful reviewing etc. I wanted an attractive compact digital camera with a large zoom mostly for taking pictures of my kids playing sport, social occasions and holidays etc. The first camera I had was impossible to focus when the zoom was activated even when tested on a tripod to eliminate any chance of operator error. I returned this and thought that I just had a rogue camera! The replacement was better but still not good on auto focus at all. I always have to take at least 4 or 5 shots of something important just to ensure that I get one shot that is in focus! It is better outside in natural daylight without any zoom, but try it in sports mode or at high zoom and you've lost it! I have never taken so many blurred and out of focus pictures in my life! My teenage daughter has a much cheaper olympus and it is far more reliable. When photos are taken in daylight it can produce lovely shots but the zoom is almost impossible. Indoor shots are grainy and rather washed out colourwise and have weak flash. Having discussed it with a friend who found the same thing with her same model camera - we both decided to trade them in for Canons with shorter zooms and haven't regretted it! Buyer beware!
