Product Description

Product Description

The Leica M system is now open for professional digital photography. Breaking completely new ground, the Leica M8 doesn t only look like an M - it utilizes all the benefits of the analog Leica M system for sophisticated and creative digital photography. It is the only digital camera for professionals to incorporate the rangefinder system with its advantages of discreet and quiet operation, speed and precision. And the no-compromise quality criteria of the M system continue to apply to the M8. Full compatibility with nearly all M lenses means that their unique imaging performance is now available for digital photography, too. The low-noise CCD image sensor with a resolution of 10.3 megapixels has been specifically matched to the compact lens design to guarantee superlative photographic quality. The controls and functions of the digital M still concentrate on the essentials. The proven M concept is complemented by the intelligent extra functions that digital technology has to offer.

5.0 out of 5 stars The most enjoyable camera I've ever used., 14 July 2008
By Farnz "Farnz" (London, UK) - See all my reviews
I've used many cameras during my career from 35mm to medium format both film and digital but the Leica M8 is by far the most enjoyable to use. And the results are outstanding too. The little-known advantage that the Leica M8 has over ALL other digital cameras is that it doesn't have an anti-aliasing filter. "A what?!" I hear you say - an AA filter is designed to divide the image arriving at the electronic sensor into parcels that don't spill over the edges of the pixels - to keep it all tidy. But this process can cause loss of detail, which means loss of image sharpness. The clever people at Leica recognised this and because Leica lenses are deliberately designed to capture the maximum amount of detail they decided not to use an AA filter so that the M8 could make use of the enormous amount of detail offered by its lenses. And this means razor-sharp images right out of the camera.

Now you won't find lots of the common gimmicks in the Leica M8 because it's a camera which encourages the user to make decisions for him or herself and involves the user directly in the making of the photograph. So there's no anti-shake, no autofocus, no autobracketting etc but there is every tool to allow you, the Photographer, to make choices yourself to produce the best photos possible without the distractions of all the superfluous buttons and dials that are obligatory on modern dSLRs. No, the distractions are cleared away and the Leica M8 leaves you with only the essential tools like precision manual focus adjustment, manual ISO selection and manual aperture control. That's all you need! Sure you can instantly review the shot you've just taken, check its histogram, and delete and re-shoot if you choose - it's up to you.

After using dSLRs with every gadget imaginable, which do your thinking for you, it's a joy to return to a camera that puts the control back into your hands so that the images you make are the images you chose to make and you reap the gratification and sense of achievement. You can use a dSLR in burst mode to capture 20 shots in quick succession to try to get the one picture you wanted but that's like fishing for salmon with dynamite. The Leica M8 gives you back your rod and reel. Try the M8 - it might infuriate you sometimes but you'll love the tactile involvement, the sheer directness and above all the astoundingly sharp end product.

Go on, treat yourself to a Leica M8 that will encourage you to learn and develop and that is produced by the most respected brand name in the history of photography. Bar none.

5.0 out of 5 stars Supreme digital, 15 Aug 2007
By Frank Dernie (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I had gone over to digital for the convenience of variable ASA settings and instant use of the results without waiting for processing. I missed my small superb Leica M6 for the portability and quality as I was using the excellent but big heavy Canon EOS 1Ds mk2. I bought a Leica m8 in March and am so pleased. My 35mm f1.4 aspherical lens, the best lens I have ever used, is back on a camera and the prints are extraordinary, clearly a better look than the Canon. The theoretical resolution is less but the results are knockout, whether lens or sensor I don't know.
One big downside is the need for expensive IR cut filters on each lens.
