Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

7.1 Megapixels
A 7.1 Megapixel CCD sensor captures every scene with enough fine detail for large photo quality prints.

Wide-angle lens with optical IS
A 28mm (equivalent) wide-angle lens with 3.8x zoom takes in more of every scene. Canon's optical Image Stabilizer (IS) technology counteracts camera shake for steady shots at slower shutter speeds and full zoom.

IXUS Styling
Sleek, smart and elegant, the Digital IXUS 850 IS is finished in an all-metal body with the rounded contours of the IXUS 'Perpetual Curve' design.

DIGIC III Processor
Canon's best of breed DIGIC III processor provides lightning quick responses, superb image quality and advanced noise reduction for sharper, clearer images. iSAPS technology analyses each scene to optimise key camera settings even before a shot is taken.

Face Detection AF/AE
Face Detection AF/AE ensures superb people shots by automatically detecting the subjects in the frame and setting the optimum focus and exposure. "My Category" tags each image based on face detection and shooting mode for easy image navigation, printing, deleting and much more.

Large LCD
The high resolution 2.5" LCD screen features a wide viewing angle for easy group viewing. The Image Inspection Tool enables instant checks for image sharpness.

Shooting modes
Choose from 17 shooting modes including Special Scene modes to help with tricky lighting conditions, such as Night Snapshot and Snow. Shoot smooth VGA (30fps) and QVGA (60fps) video with Movie mode.

My Colors
Apply special in-camera colour effects both during and after shooting. Lighten skin tones in portraits, or add extra vibrancy to blue skies for stunning, punchy landscapes.

Flash-free low light shooting
A low-noise ISO 1600 setting combines with optical IS to enable flash-free shooting indoors and at night. High ISO Auto mode automatically sets an optimal high ISO setting to allow for faster shutter speeds, further reducing the effects of camera shake.

Safety Zoom
Safety Zoom takes advantage of the camera's large resolution to offer extra zoom magnification without affecting image quality. Capture images at up to 7.3x zoom with enough detail for lab-quality postcard (10 x 15cm) prints. Capture VGA quality stills for TV playback at 15x zoom.

Direct Printing
Connect to any PictBridge compatible photo printer and push the Print/Share button for instant photolab quality prints.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ixus 850 fantastic compact, 3 Nov 2006
By Lloyd G (London, UK) - See all my reviews
This camera is great. Several hundred pictures have been taken on it since it was bought a couple of weeks ago and every one has come out correctly exposed and most have been perfectly focussed. So as a point and shoot it is the best I have seen. Its face recognition is very clever, works well and is far from being the gimmick I was expecting. I would only buy a camera with a wide angle setting and compared it with the Ricoh Caplio R5. The Ricoh camera has a brilliant zoom and the best macro I have seen in a ultra compact, but exposure especially with flash was not as good - so more dud pictures in less than ideal lighting situations.

The Canon feels good, looks good and has some features like its bright display, the way it auto rotates images when viewing, the face recognition that puts it ahead of the competition. Yes it would be even better if it had the zoom the Ricoh has and I don't particularly like the zoom control, but there have to be some compromises - so I am still giving it a 5

5.0 out of 5 stars IXUS 850IS, 15 Nov 2006
By Weekendwarrior "Rich" (Manchester, England) - See all my reviews
I bought this camera for use when away with work, ive used it in pretty harsh environments ie in the middle east where its extremely hot and sandy and had no problems with it. The face detection works well however its a bit hit and miss when the subjects face isn't square on but thats to be expected. ive taken some great wide angled shots that are detailed in all depths. The thing that most impresses though is the time it takes to turn on which is around .6 of a second, and the time between shots is excellent too so no more missed photos! good little camera, good screen and is recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHERS REVIEW, 3 Nov 2006
By Paul Prescott - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I am a pro user, working in the travel and fashion fields, and i got this little camera to use personally when on holiday- my normal kit consists of a hasselblad and nikon digi slr, and i bought the ixus 850 cos i got sick of carrying my slr around with me when travelling! obviously the picture quality from a little compact can't be as good as an slr, but i have to say it isnt far behind. you can go to the n'th degree when reading these reviews and deciding which camera to buy i know, but i am very fussy when it comes to imaging as you can imagine, and i love this camera, so hopefully that will give you the push you need to buy it. the image stabiliser works ok, lens quality is as good as is needed, flash ok but limited of course, start up time rapid, screen good, little in the way of lens abberations which is pleasantly surprising in a compact, price good, overexposes a little in bright conditions so check your pics after shooting, battery life amazing! i treat my holiday snaps like a commission from national geographic (!), i like to come home with images that would slip into my portfolio, and this camera can do it. REMEMBER- its not what you've got, it's what you do with it!
