Amazon.co.uk Review

Recorded at various concert venues on their 1999/2000 tour Montage is a live showcase of the Pet Shop Boys' greatest hits, along with selected album tracks. All the Pet favourites are included, ranging from career and concert opener "West End Girls" to more recent tunes like "New York City Boy".

Since their first worldwide tour in 1989, Pet Shop Boys concerts have always been rather arty affairs which have ranged from the "shocking" dance routines of the Behaviour tour to their introspective 1997 residence at London's Savoy Theatre. The Nightlife tour was no exception, merging a Zahing Hadid modernist stage set with wacky stage projections and gonk-style wigs and costumes. Artistically though, Nightlife was their best tour yet but this isn't always reflected on this recording. At times the picture quality and the cinematography are poor, resembling a 1980s art student's show reel (but then perhaps that was the intention). However the poor visual recording is redeemed by Tennant and Lowe's excellent performances and the striking special effects. Their rendition of "What Have I Done to Deserve This" including the original vocals of the late Dusty Springfield is particularly moving. The reworked live version of their minor 1991 hit "Was It Worth It?" also deserves a listen. In their own words, "Darling you were wonderful."

On the DVD: with the Pet Shop Boys' ultra-modern image you would perhaps expect this DVD to be brimming with extras. Instead you have to make do with the promotional videos of "I Don't Know What You Want But I Can't Give It Any More", "New York City Boy" and "You Only Tell Me You Love Me When You're Drunk", plus an exclusive web-link. As well as being able to view the full concert or individual tracks through the main menu you can also select one of two angles to view the show. The sound recording is excellent with a choice of Dolby Digital Stereo or Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound.--John Galilee

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed..., 29 Jun 2002
The PetShopBoys first used this montage technique on their Highlights video-from their first tour-with Derek Jarman at the helm. In that case, it worked wonderfully, because Derek was involved in the filming and editing and he really was the visual equivalent of a poet. It was all put together beautifully, subtly and seamlessly, with Mr. Jarman's atmospheric film backdrops, and soft dissolves and fades. There was also an almost perfect balance between live and projection footage-a true artist at work. It's a shame, however, the same can't be said of this visually disappointing offering.
Someone with as much subtelty as a sledgehammer has obviously been let loose to edit this one. Instead of a light touch and restraint, we are bombarded and overloaded with badly videoed concert footage (not enough close-ups), bits of promo-videos, computer graphics, pointless mirror images, and unforgiveably bad quality webcast footage, taken from the net-sometimes all seen together. It's as if an over-enthusiastic kid has been let loose with a computer and video editing software. There's just too much going on at once and it becomes confusing, and tiring to watch after a while. It has pretentions to being ultra-creative, but there's a thin line between a 'stunning visual experience' (the DVD blurb assures us) and a complete and utter mess, and this crosses that line.
I went to one of the concerts on this tour and had a great time, but this disc doesn't really bring any of the spectacle to life. The show itself, when I saw it, was stunning and inventive, but most of it is seen here only as brief glimpses, often in tiny boxes. Amusing moments like the backing singers dancing down the ramp in their sailor suits are barely shown.
Quite what possessed a group so concerned with quality control and overseeing everything that they release down to the last detail, to allow this to slip through, is beyond me.
There are good things to be said about this disc too, though. The sound is absolutely brilliant and it would probably work better just being listened to witout the annoying video footage. There are also 3 promo-videos included, and a hidden song, which becomes accessible by playing these 3 singles, one after the other.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful to listen to- but is it worth watching?, 26 Nov 2004
By A Customer
I bought this about a year ago. I have watched it about twice since then. The montage experiment doesn't work. It is too intrusive, and frankly becomes annoying when you want to see what's going on on stage.

However, I have listened to it more times than I can tell. The Pet Shop Boys are not a band who are content to play their songs exactly as we first heard them. More often than not the songs have been extensively revised, and even improved ('Only the Wind' is perhaps the major example). This alone makes the DVD collectable for any fan; worthy of note as well are the more vicious 'Can You Forgive Her?', a completely unexpected rendition of 'Being Boring' and, best of all, a more haunting and lingering version of 'Young Offender'. Despite the visual failure, the DVD is more than rescued by the songs on display.

They can't do anything to make 'New York City Boy' less unbearable to listen to, but then I suspect God himself couldn't...

5.0 out of 5 stars Well done boys! But get yourself a new cameraman next time!, 10 Jan 2002
By A Customer
A montage of PSB's Nightlife 1999 - 2000 World Tour finally released after two years. All the usual brilliant songs are there, many of the tracks in the concert taken off their (then) newly released 'Nightlife' album. Contains probably the best track off the 'Nightlife' album, 'Closer To Heaven' (which wasn't performed in the UK concerts) and also the fantastic 'Shameless' track which was a surprise when it was performed live!! The sound on the DVD, if played through a Dolby Digital processor, is excellent. The DVD also contains different angle shots, namely the stage shots and the projection images which were beamed onto the background on stage. Extras include the videos for 'New York City Boy', 'I Don't Know What You Want But I Can't Give It Anymore' and 'You Only Tell Me You Love Me When You're Drunk' and if you play all three one after the other, you get an extra segment - the projection at the very beginning of the concert which was 'For Your Own Good'. The only minus point of the DVD is some of the camerawork onto the stage is very poor - some are out of focus and others are rather shakey and poorly produced. But don't let this put you off - overall, the DVD is a brilliant reminder if you went to see the concert live.
