5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, but seems to be pretty hard to find now., 19 Feb 2001
If you liked the Pixies, and in particular, Trompe Le Monde, you will like this album. Its on a similar level to Teenager of the Year, but maybe slightly less adventurous; theres no reggae on this CD! Listening to the album you get the impression that this is Frank making his escape from the Pixies, and its not necessarily a bad thing. The mix of guitars and keyboards (Eric Drew Feldman) is a great combination. Theres so many great tunes to choose from here, 15 in total. Stand-out tracks are 'Los Angeles', 'Old Black Dawning', 'Ten Percenter'....the messed up timing at the end of 'Parry the Wind High, Low' is just absolute genius. Every track is great, and they'll all grow on you. Even the complete madness of 'Brackish Boy' shows that Frank still knows how to tell a good story in his own special way. Personally i prefer the Frank Black albums which featured the keyboards (eg 'Frank Black' and 'Teenager of the Year') rather than the newer stuff that he's done with the Catholics (eg 'Pistolero')but they still have their merits. The most recent album 'Dog in the Sand' is a tremendous return to form though; the simple addition of a keyboard/piano really does make all the difference. If you like 'Dog in the Sand' then for gods sake buy this album you'll love it.
