Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Having released three albums in their native Iceland and played close to 700 gigs across Europe and America since forming back in 1992, it's fair to say that--while It's All True may be their first UK album proper--the four girls and a boy that make up Bellatrix have been around the block a few times. And it shows. Theirs is indie rock chaos honed to perfection, carrying off a neat balancing act between punk noise and pop melodies that beg to be hummed. The secret of Bellatrix's success is the way they've stolen the best pop bones of one-time chart favourites Sleeper and grafted them on to the twisted disco basslines and killer synth hooks that have made gods of Elastica. Add the operatically trained Eliza Maria Geirsdottir, who ditches the regular sultry girl-with-guitar mumblings, for passionate pronunciation to make those quirky choruses stick and the net result is Alanis Morrisette singing Elastica's greatest hits; this is stranger than it sounds, and much, much better than it should be. --Dan Gennoe

5.0 out of 5 stars Hasn't been off my play list since I bought it two years ago, 1 April 2002
By raaah@hotmail.com (North London) - See all my reviews
I saw this band at a festival and was so blown away, they were one of the the best things I saw all weekend! It's such an easy cd to listen to, and there's a song to suit every emotion, I think it's quite guitary but quite innovative music. If you are a fan of good melodies you'll really enjoy this album.

3.0 out of 5 stars Promising although slighty immature debut from Bjork-alikes, 4 Dec 2000
By jleonard@madasafish.com (Lincoln, England) - See all my reviews
Some may say that the last thing the world needs now is another Bjork soundalike but Bellatrix have found one here anyway in the shape of lead singer Eliza. In truth she is far and away the major talent here on this debut album and should be destined for greater things. This is in many ways a typical debut album, a band struggling to achieve much identity of their own but with a few very good efforts which suggest that when the sum of all the parts come together they can be quite invigorating. The key track here is the single 'Sweet Surrender', Eliza's voice soaring and gliding whilst the guitarists behind her manage to sound like a grunge band par excellence. Most of the time, though, the songs are Kenickie-like punk pop with rather childish lyrics about schoolgirl crushes and dreaming of being a Jedi knight; it's fairly accompilshed stuff musically but it achieves nothing in terms of originality although 'If I Fall' and 'Tamed Tiger' are more gentle and reflective indicating a maturer touch which may yet serve them well. File under 'Promising' and thank the heavens that Bellatrix at least don't have an annoying male vocalist like fellow Icelanders The Sugarcubes used to have.

4.0 out of 5 stars Top Notch Icelandic Pop, 8 May 2000
By A Customer
Obviously at the time of writing this review the CD is not yet released, however, the band do allow MP3 video and audio downloads from their website. Having visited their site, and seeing them a couple of times on tour, I can tell you there are some killer tunes on this disc. Perhaps lacking the 'bite' you get live from the bounciest most up-for-it band around at the moment it is none-the-less a cracking selection.

"The Girl with the Sparkling Eyes" and latest single "Sweet Surrender" stand out, as do "Tamed Tiger" and "This Boy will be Mine". The band mix sweet tuneful balladeering with jumped up agit-pop sloganeering to explosive effect and whilst it's only partially evident on this cd the message is clear - get out and see them soon!
