Product Description

CD Description

Frank Black's last album of the 20th century, PISTOLERO, finds the ex-Pixie leading his Catholics ensemble through a confident, energetic set that captures some of the verve of his former band without sounding overly indebted to that revered group. Highlights include raucous tunes such as "Western Star", "I Love Your Brain", and "Skeleton Man".

5.0 out of 5 stars I hear that sound, that clickety-clack., 24 Nov 2003
By J. Brooks (Manchester, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Four fantastic musicians, recording live in the studio. No pretensions, just straightforward honest rock and roll.

But this is from Frank Black, so it ROCKS so hard it's unbelievable. When I Switched You plays, the energy just blasts from the speakers. I cannot listen to this without a grin forming from ear to ear. For sheer rocking lunacy, this is up there with Planet Of Sound.

The songwriting is inspired, with epics such as So Hard To Make Things Out, a glorious three-parter that surprises with every listen, and So Bay which is ultra-atmospheric.

The rest of the songs are pretty darn good. Frank makes a much better job of writing a ballad with You're Such A Wire, than he achieved on previous albums such as Cult of Ray. Western Star is beautifully written and performed. There are many great singalong tracks too, demonstrating Frank Black's ability to combine great melodies with raw energy (not to mention the usual incomprehensible lyrics).

In summary, one of Frank Black's best rock albums, and that is some compliment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Frank still rocks with his latest release!, 16 Dec 1999

Standout tracks include:- Western Star, 85 Weeks, 'n Smoke Up. The Sci Fi weirdnesss we loved Frank for on Cult of Ray has gone but you'll still love him after hearing this. The straight to two track recording suits Frank's raw, live rockin' sound great! If you've liked his previous albums you will not be dissapointed and even if you didn't this one is more approachable than some of his stuff, could even have a few hit singles on it if he ever got played on air! Buy it right now!

5.0 out of 5 stars Yo Soy Un Pistolero/ Lunatic/Rock God., 16 Jun 2000
By A Customer
As a converted Pixies fan I am now delving into the excellence of Mr Frank and his religeous sect. The rock out and out, The songs don't grab you as fast and as hard as the master peice that is Teenager of the Year but still awesome. I would agree with the other guy who reveiwed it and say that Western Star is the standout track but concept songs such as bad harmony are still far beyond anything a Travis fan could get his media fed head around. Why don't these people listen to something far out .No Offenseto them.

At worst this album is less accesable at best it is fantastic! When can we have the next one Uncle Frank and when are you going to come and play in London!

P.S. Nothing agaist Travis fans, I could have used anyone as that example, Oasis, Stereophonics anyone else in the public eye. Travis are a good band. Frank Black on the other hand is a ledgend to a generation.

This album is thought by some to be one of the highlights of FB's solo career. In my opinion, it's not- not because it isn't good, but because the first Catholics album was much... Read more
