Product Description

CD Description

Long before the phrase, "Seattle scene" spoke of an impact that a new generation of musicians was having on rock music,Alice in Chains was struggling to be recognised in the shadow of bands that were more focused on image than craft. On FACELIFT, the band's major label debut, Alice in Chains proved that its fusion of blues, hard rock, and gritty imagery was a force to be reckoned with. While college radio stations ate up fare like "It Ain't Like That" and "We Die Young", the song "Man in a Box" became a banner track that pushed the band into the forefront of heavy rotation on MTV and the playlists of mainstream rock radio stations.
Vocalist Layne Staley's moody, dynamic vocals on "Love, Hate, Love" tell a chilling tale of a homicidal psychotic lamenting and musing over what he's done to his lover. On tracks such as "Sea of Sorrow" and "I Can't Remember", guitarist Jerry Cantrell shows equally impressive skill in Sabbath-styled riffing, blueslicks, and Hendrix-influenced solos. Alice in Chains made abrash musical and lyrical statement that gave the stale eraof thrash and hair metal a much-needed facelift.

4.0 out of 5 stars Raw, Loud and Powerful yet sophisticated., 2 Jan 2005
By A Customer
To start with I would just like to set a few things straight, in my mind Alice in Chains were never, in my opinion, grunge. They were more sophisticated than that; each band member complementing one another in a way beyond the simple rough edged style of grunge.

Any way, onto Face Lift, This is an amazing, totally refreshing debut album. Right from the word go, the fast paced "we die young" sets the standard, spookily pre empting a certain band members future run in with the reaper.

"Man In the Box" is breath taking, the opening base, the gravely guitars, Staley's haunting gravely voice, this song is so good you just wonder whether the rest of the album can keep pace.

"Sea of Sorrow" starts a little slowly, but gets going with Cantrell's but the guitar solo's are fantastic, and if you don't get a speeding ticket driving to this song then there is something very wrong with you.

"Bleed the Freak" is possibly the darkest song on the album, slow, fast, and brilliant.

I could go though all the tracks describing them, but words cant really do the tracks justice.

This is a rock album with attitude, raw loud and powerful whilst maintaining a sophistication reflective of just how much talent this band has.

This was the first AIC album I bought but I suspect many will have started off with dirt, and are contemplating buying Face Lift. Naturally I would advise they do just that but a comparison may help.

Compared to Dirt, Face Lift I suppose isn't quite as dark, although at the same time, it can be heavier. I suppose that Face Lift also sounds a little older, though this doesn't suggest that it is dated, just more rock than metal.

This album is my favourite, although quite different to all the other AIC albums, no surprises there I suppose given how diverse all their albums are from one another.

My ultimate recommendation:

Buy, in this order:

1): Dirt if you haven't got it already, probably the most accessible.
2): Face Lift (for all those reasons above) this is a more rocky Alice in Chains
3): Jar of flies (sap) totally different to the other 2 above, far more emotion stirring.
5): Alice in Chains Unplugged
6): Alice in Chains live, fantastic
7): Alice in Chains Alice in Chains (self titled) very very very dark.

4.0 out of 5 stars The beginning of one of the true greats, 13 Dec 2002
Like most people, I started my Alice collection with the magnificent 'Dirt' album from 1992, which is in my top 3 of all-time great records. Then I got a copy of 'Facelift', expecting a few good songs, with a few other OK ones. Well i got a pleasant surprise when I first listened to this. The first 6 tracks stood out as being superb, certainly up the standard of the material on 'Dirt'. The other 6 tracks grew on me the more i listened to it, and I'd now rate 9 or 10 out of the 12 as being great.

It's difficult to pick out the 'best' songs, it's easier to pick out personal favourites. Mine would have to be the opener 'We Die Young', the bitter 'Bleed The Freak' and the sleaze of hit single 'Man In The Box'. I liked the mix of laid back and more hectic moments, from the twisted love song 'Love Hate Love' to the grooving 'Put You Down'. Even the weakest tracks aren't bad at all, just not AS good as the rest.

As for the overall sound, you can definitely still hear the influence that Alice drew the 80's metal scene, Guns N' Roses in particular. However, they have progressed their sound from their early style and works well with their now trademark dirty grunge sound. Layne, as usual, produces some stunning vocals, Jerry can seemingly grind out brilliant riffs and solos for fun, and Mike and Sean make for an excellent rhythm section.

All i can say is that this is an very impressive debut from AIC, and i would highly recommend fans of Alice in Chains, Metallica, Jerry Cantrell, Guns N' Roses, Soundgarden etc, to try this out.

4.0 out of 5 stars Simply the start, 26 Aug 2003
By A Customer
The often overlooked "Facelift" marks the starting point from which Alice in Chains staked a claim in the Seattle scene. Tracks like "We die young" and "Man in the box" instantly grab the attention, whilst other tracks such as "Love, Hate, Love" approach from a slower, more subtle angle but still leave the listener in awe of the haunting but powerful vocals of Layne Staley. Definately a more instantly accessable album than their second album "Dirt", "Facelift"'s slam-bang rock style smacks of late eighties rock, but without the cheesey cliches and an added edginess with a raw sound. Classic stuff from an awesome band, and that's without even going into the classic "Dirt" album !!!
