Product Description

CD Description

THE BEST OF THE ART OF NOISE is a slightly misleading title. This ten-track compilation from 1989 contains none of AnneDudley and J.J. Jeczalik's innovative and groundbreaking collaborations with producer/theorist Trevor Horn from 1982 to1985 (except in the form of themes and motifs which endlessly recur throughout this album and the rest of the Art of Noise's many releases). Also, this compilation contains no re-releases of familiar material, but entirely--and in some cases startlingly--new remixes of the older works.
The compilation focuses on the band's singles, including a drastically altered version of their hit "Legs" called "Legacy", as well as novelties like collaborations with Duane Eddy ("Peter Gunn"), Max Headroom ("Paranoimia"), Dan Ackroyd ("Dragnet '88") and Tom Jones (Prince's "Kiss"). Other tracks include the lovely, orchestral "Opus" and the more sinister "Something Always Happens".

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the Best way to discover the Art of Noise...., 27 May 2005
By Mr. Ro Johns "bobojohns" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Let me declare an interest; Art of Noise are my favourite band, and have been since I was 16. Those not interested in a fans opinion, turn away now!

This is the second version of the 'Best of' that China have released. The first, blue covered version is superior in many ways. The problem with this compilation is that it contains nothing from AON's first few releases, which means classics such as Moments in Love, Close to the Edit and Beatbox are missing. This is due to licencing issues between AoN's first label ZTT, and the later lable, China, who have released this compilation.

Having said that, it does gove a good taster of their later, and some would argue more commercial sounding tracks. Nothing wrong at all with the likes of Peter Gunn, Legacy etc, but unfortunately later releases such as Yebo, and 'cash cow' releases by the China label, such as the Prodigy remix of Instruments of Darkness simply can't hold a candle to the missing tracks.

The second problem is that the versions of the better singles chosen are inferior to the original releases. Often, they are extended mixes, which whilst 'not bad', often fall into the remix trap and fall short of the originals. This is notably the case for Paranoimia, Peter Gunn, Dragnet and Kiss.

Having been critical so far, I should restate that I am a fan of the band and maybe pickier than most. This compilation still demonstrates that AON were decades ahead of the game, and gives a sample of the wonderful catchy oddity that they represent. To me, no band has pushed the sampler as hard as they did back then, and no one has matched their sheer inventiveness. The Prodigy's remix, we see an embodyiment of the impact on modern electronica and dance.

I must emphasise here that despite this, this is not an album of what would now be called 'Dance', so folks who like a good tune should be safe! There is none of the drum and bass meandering rythmical m*sturbation or 'duff duff duff' of house.

Also, Something Always Happens, a track not available on any album is excellent, and well worth the £4.99 that Amazon are currently charging!

In sumation then, a pretty good introduction to Art of Noise at their most commerical, but if you are looking for that wonderful aural inventiveness, great hooks, classical genius and quirky electronica that are the AON at their best, I'd try and get the old 'blue' edition or buy an album proper (I would recommend Invisible Silence, In No Sense Nonsense or Daft).

"Oh, you don't think I should do one more...?"

3.0 out of 5 stars Bizarre but intriguing, 23 Mar 2001
By A Customer
Plant yourself between your speakers, switch off the lights, close your eyes and relax. This album is possibly the most soothing in my collection. The Art of Noise is the Picasso of the music world, creating an original style of music which other artists have never managed to emulate. Their musical creativity is demonstrated by the totally different sounds of each track. 'Yebo' utilises tribal vocals, 'Instruments of Darkness' mixes panpipes with rave, and the fantastic 'Dragnet'(from the film of the same name) gets Dan Ackroyd rapping. The strangely amusing lyrics of 'Paranoimia', performed by Max Headroom, get me smiling every time I listen, and I suspect Baz Luhrmann's 'Sunscreen' took a few tips from this track. Fans of Tom Jones will enjoy the rendition of 'Kiss', but the track which will reach out and grab you has to be 'Peter Gunn'. Featuring Duane Eddy, this musical masterpiece is the epitomy of the Art of Noise and combines a healthy bassline with the unmistakeable 'electro-human' sounds which, in my opinion, are the trademark of the Art of Noise. Remember the theme tune they wrote for ITV's 'Krypton Factor'(Gordon Burns torturing contestants mentally and physically)? Well if you liked that, buy this album. I promise you won't be disappointed. Yello fans will appreciate this album too - there are similarities in the musical style, although the Art of Noise rounds the edges of the tunes to give a more soothing sensation.

3.0 out of 5 stars Art for arts sake, 30 Mar 2008
By KM WHITEHOUSE "FAN FROM BIRMINGHAM" (ENGLAND) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
In 1988 Art of Noise released their first versions of The Best Of The Art Of Noise. The LP contained the 7" versions, the cassette contained the 7" versions and the 12" versions of their collaborations with Duane Eddy, Max Headroom & Tom Jones. This left the CD to contain all the 12" versions. In 1992 China Records issued this version removing the ZTT singles, Beat Box, Moments In Love & Close (To The Edit) and replaced them with the single Yebo!, the album track Robinson Crusoe and the 1991 remix of Instruments Of Darkness that was remixed by the Prodigy. The rest of the tracks are the 7" versions that were on the original 1988 LP. This album would have been better if China Records had left the ZTT tracks on and made this the CD issue of the LP. This album only runs for around 35 minutes which is a bit of a let down for any best of album but contains some real groundbreaking material.

Not bad but not really Art of Noise at their best.
