3.0 out of 5 stars Light and Easy, 16 Nov 1999
By A Customer
I'm a big Simply Red fan, but I don't think this is their greatest album ever. I highly respect Mick Hucknall's tenor , I think he has the most amazing soul voice. However, I prefer his older stuff, as it is not so commercial. This collection is a bit lightweight and superficial. All in all, it is fun though, great to dance to and easy listening. And it will appeal to a range of age groups.

1.0 out of 5 stars Worst album in my collection, 23 May 2001
By A Customer
Avoid this album at all costs. It's an unbelievably appalling set of bland, embarassing MOR. Every track is the same - boring keyboard riff, drum beat, saxophone and a few guitars here and there. The worst culprit of all is Out On The Range which is overlong while being bland. His croonings about "the first time we made love" on Remembering the First Time are so embarassing. Hillside Avenue is hideous - he tries to do reggae with apalling results. Never Never Love, Lives and Loves and So Many People are just bland.

There is one classic track, however - Fairground. For once it isn't MOR. The beat and keyboards are really upbeat and danceable unlike the rest of the album. The chorus soars like Stars.

Overall, this is a one song album. It is unbelievable that this is the follow up to Stars - the third best selling album in Britain ever. Stars is a classic but this is just apalling.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Is "Life", 11 Dec 2005
Hello

Simply Red changed after the Stars album, not rapidly but they did change. Life is an album with so many different music genres, bit of R+B bit of Soul bit of Pop Bit Of Rock, And alot of Good Reggae.

You CANNOT class Simply Red into a genre its impossible, you cannot label them one genre.

Right back to Life, Life had to be a good album to follow Stars and it was. Pure class.

My favourite song is Hillside Avenue you can’t deny how good that song is. Simply Red only has one number 1 in this country. Just goes to show you, how rubbish the music industry is at this time.

It’s so easy to listen to, you can sort of relate to each song. Mick is clearly not just righting perky 3 minute love songs.

This is proper music. Go Buy.

Regards
Sam Kitching

I have to say that although this may not be Simply Red's best work (I think the end of the 90's era with Blue and Love and the Russian Winter is their best stuff with Home coming... Read more
