Product Description

CD Description

As their name suggests, Cornershop (slang for Indian-owned grocery stores in Britain), features a musical hybrid of theband's East meets West influences. Their sophomore stab, WOMAN'S GOTTA HAVE IT, is one of the most original and innovative albums of 1995. The band started in 1992 as a hardcore group called General Havoc, when brothers Tjinder and Avtar Singh and their best friend Ben Ayers were still in college.
Their music ranges from Velvet Underground-styled garage/guitar-based rock sung in English ("Hong Kong Book Of Kung Fu", and "Call All Destroyer"), to traditional Indian music that's chanted in Hindi and backed by sitar, dohiki and tablas ("6 A.M. Jullander Shere", and "My Dancing Days Are Done"). Often, the orchestration is updated with synthesizer, dance beats and samples giving the music it's own unique identity. Their best songs, however, combine the two disparate influences: "Camp Orange" samples tribal chanting over trip-hop beats, while the poppier "Wog" combines Ovation-like guitar strumming, tribal chanting and lyrics sung in both English and Hindi. On "Wog", Tjinder sums up the underlying premise of this original sounding album: "This western Oriental's going full circle".

5.0 out of 5 stars Possibly Cornershop's best release, 8 Jun 2002
This was Cornershop's last release before they were thrust into the public eye with 'Brimful of Asha'. Here, their lo-fi indie is at its most compelling as both their pop/rock songs and their dance tinged numbers are superior to that of the album that followed. 'WOG', a gentle catchy strummer, is a wonderful single and the often praised '6 AM Jullander Shere' is an epic Punjabi wail that heralds the albums beginnings and waves it off at the end. In between we get some brilliant songs like the rocking 'Hong Kong Book of Kung Fu', the punky 'Call All Destroyer', the beautifully dreamy 'Roof Rack' and the marvellously intriguing 'My Dancing Days are Done', as well as a handful of other mini masterpieces. I frequently think this could be my favourite Cornershop release, only challenged by their new opus 'Handcream for a Generation'. Buy both today.

5.0 out of 5 stars a private masterpiece, 13 Jun 2007
By CarloMarcio (Florence) - See all my reviews
This is one of my favourite records. I remember buying it at a Cornershop gig summer 95 at the UPSTAIRS to the garage. It seemed to me so strange and new and i was so upset that nobody even noticed it. After few years they came back with that blockbuster named "when i was born bla bla bla" same formula as in here and everybody was singing brimful of asha after a week cornershop were known even by my 6 years cousin. But i was happy because most of the people obsessed with brimful of asha did'nt even imagine that before that stood a misteriously unknown masterpiece.
