5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning setting of a Greek tragedy, 19 Jan 2009
By Tancredi (Manchester) - See all my reviews
I first heard this Opera, at is one and only production by ENO, I found it gripping but difficult at first hearing.

This performance and the passage of time has made me see what a remarkable work it is, lyrical, erotic, blood thirsty, and all the time, slowly but surely Pentheus King of Thebes is being blindly drawn closer and closer to the destruction of himself and his family.

The performance with the "Intermezzo " sadly cut is excellent. It is sung in English so a few foreign accents, German and American , but nothing to spoil your enjoyment.

If you "enjoy" Wozzeck or the Rakes Progress, give this remarkable work a chance, its unlikely to be staged in England but not too difficult to see abroad
