5.0 out of 5 stars black francis the king, 31 Jul 2005

(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
frank black's one of his many solo albums and my first and what a first solo album to pick up,it's filled with lyrics you would expect from francis black simple yet menacing and meaningful like bob dylan.. the music is distorted with great guitar solo's and frank black's voice is on top form.. with great delievery
the last track the "man that was too loud" is fabulous
this is not the pixies and we wouldn't it to be...this is black francis being frank black without the tag of the pixies
you go francis

4.0 out of 5 stars Black was back, all in, 6 Feb 2002
Lets get this out of the way, it's not as good as the Pixies. It's not even the best Frank Black album. What it is, however, is a spontanious sounding collections of songs that sound, for want of a better word, intimate. I've got a semi bootleg of Frank Black and Joey Santiago jamming in Franks Kitchen, relaxed, smoking cigars. This album has the same feel, a sound so friendly that you forgive it its lumpy, ugly bits and its ragged edges. As an album it has a loose, gangling friendliness similar in feel but not sound to some of the Mudhoney albums, some guys having a laugh.

Material wise there's a less MTV friendly feeling than 'Cult of Ray', less experimental than 'Teenager of the Year. If anything the material is like a less thought out version of the eponymous Frank Black album. There's a song about giants and angels; an oblique obituary for Jack Nance, the actor who played Henry X in David Lynch's 'Eraserhead'; the jauntiest song ever about the devil; Frank takes a playful pop at himself on 'The man who was too loud'. They're good songs, not great ones, but this is Black Francis good, the man who wrote all the songs of the late, GREAT Pixies, a difficult shadow to have behind you, which will always draw unfavourable comparisons.

Way back in another age in another band a man named Black Francis told us "I wanna be a singer like Lou Reed". Think Live 1969 by The Velvet Underground and he's just about made it on this album, he actually does sound like Lou Reed circa that period. It's not as good as the Pixies, then, though, what ever is?
