5.0 out of 5 stars A lesser known classic, 7 Oct 2003

A lot to get through here! What you have here is a summary of the older Ninja Tune catalogue to date as mixed by DJ Krush and Coldcut themselves. What you end up with is much more than what you'd expect from a label compilation. Stuff like Xen Cuts and Funkungfusion are fine examples of the Ninja catalogue, what sets this apart from those releases are the DJs at the controls.

Coldcut offer up a mix that is in a similar vein to their outstanding Journeys By DJ's mix. Flitting between chilled hip hop beats, mad experimental electronic, crazy jazz and funk, right up to blissed out intelligent drum and bass. A proper journey featuring all the big Ninja names. Its not so much the tracks themselves (since some can only get a minute or two to shine) but the way they're layered and mixed together in big Coldcut melting pot. Classy.

If thats not enough, you get Japanese master DJ Krush providing his take on the past of Ninja. You get quite alot of London Funk Allstars and DJ Vadim on his mix, but where Krush shines is that he manages to make the tracks sound like they have come from his own masterful touch. The little echoing scratchings, the deep dark mood of the entire mix, the vision of the sonic journey that he creates. Its hard to tell where the track ends and DJ Krush begins. Sign of a true master.

Don't just pass this by as 'just another Ninja compilation', it stands out in its own right as something special. All those who have like the JDJ mix or indeed fans of DJ Shadow and the Mo'Wax sound should give this a try. Top mix.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic - Chilled out smokin' beats, 29 Sep 2003

I love this album. I've had it a couple of days and have not stopped listening to it. The DJ Krush cd is immense. Really laid back hip-hop. Nothing too fierce, nothing to make you jump, just a smooth blend of beats with some light-fingered scratching to keep it all moving along.

The Coldcut / DJ Food cd is a little more up beat but not much, again nice and smooth, a perfect sunday morning after a club but don't want to listen to bland 4/4 beats house music cos you're bored with it kind of cd.

Buy it and enjoy

5.0 out of 5 stars A MASTER PIECE., 8 Oct 2001
some of the finest ninja tune tracks, mixed by cold cut and djs food and krush. the food/coldcut disk offers some unusual, sample-ey hip-hop with a few tracks showing a hint of jungle. (only a hint). The remix of the rooftop prowler kicks. (This disk is purely instrumental)
The dj krush disk however is more funky and has rapping and some great tracks from london funk allstars. it also has one of my all time favourite tracks, dark aldy (dj food) just slightly mixed with scratching on the top .

this cd is over 2 HOURS of brilliance
