Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

People tend to confuse the band Mazzy Star with it's singer Hope Sandoval. Truth be told, they've been right all along. Sandoval's languid, weeping willow voice is Mazzy Star; the name is a mere formality. With nods to Nico and the Velvet Underground, So Tonight that I Might See is vintage Mazzy. Remarkably, the recording produced a strikingly undanceable single, "Fade into You". The rest of the album sticks close to the single's plaintive, retro balladry. Though Sandoval rarely raises her voice above a sultry whisper, it's bright enough to hold your attention all night. --Nick Heil

CD Description

Combining the considerable talents of guitarist Dave Roback(Opal, Rain Parade) and Hope Sandoval's sultry, heavy-lidded vocals, Mazzy Star fuses blues, country, and pulsing acoustic folk in a dark psychedelic mix that recalls the Velvet Underground and The Doors. The group's highly textured, atmospheric sound emerged glittering and fully formed on the debut SHE HANGS BRIGHTLY, surprising listeners of "underground" music with its moody yet accessible mix.
SO TONIGHT THAT I MIGHT SEE sticks close to the ground staked out by its predecessor, though with no less success. "Wasted" moves insistently down the twelve-bar road to nuanced, snarling guitar embellishments. "Blue Light" is smoky, blue-eyed (if black-hearted) soul. Of particular note is the cover of Arthur Lee's"Five String Serenade", graced with lilting cello and tambourine accompaniment. Roback's electric/lysergic guitar explorations and Sandoval's blusey, lazily erotic sigh weave a deeply evocative spell, making SO TONIGHT a perfect 2:00AM album.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dark, moody, thought provoking...classic Mazzy, 10 April 2001
By A Customer
Forget manufactured, plastic 'bands' who neither play their own instruments, write their own songs or sing live....discover Mazzy Star. This album is classic Mazzy; Sandoval's haunting vocals, hinting of dark events in any listener's life. Roback's folk/country/blues guitar complementing the mood perfectly. Fade Into You opens the album promising an unequalled experience; Bells Ring, Five String Serenade and Into Dust all deliver. There isn't a bum track or a filler on this album. It is a late night, alcohol soaked recording that will appeal to anyone with a serious, thoughtful and mature appetite.Buy it and you'll still be playing it when other bands of the moment are seeking second careers.

5.0 out of 5 stars quite a load of memories, 8 Nov 2003
This album came out when I was quite young, an older friend introduced it to me and ever since then I was entranced. Despite its nostalgic value to me it is a serious work of dirge, that shimmers, undulates, and makes its ghostly beauty felt. But then beauty is perhaps not the correct word, as words in general are clumsy in describing this album. In relation to She Hangs Brightly it takes the southern blues thing further into a more understated territory, verging on electro/accoustic shoegazer. Lyrically, she is as opaque as the Sisters of Mercy at their finest, only the content is different, more languid, and more intimate.

This album conjures images of vital aesthetic import for smacked up goths everywhere. Settle down with your pipe.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mazzy Star
Supposed to be 'Nineties Rock' but it's not - it's better than that with some great and moody tunes, one of which was in a TV commercial, which is where I came in! Excellent.

This is one of the finest second albums I have ever heard, building on the excellent 'She Hangs Brightly' with an eerily chilled-out sophistication.
