Product Description
Book Description
The immigrants from Lithuania who arrived in Scotland towards the end of Queen Victoria's reign were part of a general wave of emigration from eastern Europe; many arrived with little more than a willingness to work. The author (aka Jonas Stepsis) is a Lithuanian Scot and he tells the story of his parents' generation - how they struggled to survive and build a new life in the strange and often hostile environment of industrial Scotland and how they managed to preserve their language, culture and traditions. The earliest memories of the Lithuanian community have been obtained through personal interviews and are combined with factual detail from statistical research and contemporary sources.

Synopsis
This is the history of a small community which survived persecution and deprivation to build a new life in alien surroundings. The immigrants were met with hostility and naked xenophobia. Keir Hardie tried to raise the rabble against them for "growing fat on four shillings a week". The Lithuanian community, however, made a strong contribution to modern Scotland. The sons and daughters of that community are now fully integrated into the nation, but this is a record of the early years.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not just for genealogists, 4 Feb 2004
By alexa1424 (england) - See all my reviews
This book is well-written, informative and interesting.

Anyone who wishes to learn more about their Lithuanian ancestry, whether they moved to Scotland, the US or anywhere else in Europe, will find any information they could ever need in this book.

It helped me to understand how my relatives were persecuted by the Scots, why they moved to Scotland and why their names were changed, even what they ate and did in their spare time.

It made me feel that much closer to relatives who are sadly gone and took their culture and stories with them.
