Book Description
The immigrants from Lithuania who arrived in Scotland towards the end of Queen Victoria's reign were part of a general wave of emigration from eastern Europe; many arrived with little more than a willingness to work. The author (aka Jonas Stepsis) is a Lithuanian Scot and he tells the story of his parents' generation - how they struggled to survive and build a new life in the strange and often hostile environment of industrial Scotland and how they managed to preserve their language, culture and traditions. The earliest memories of the Lithuanian community have been obtained through personal interviews and are combined with factual detail from statistical research and contemporary sources.
Synopsis
This is the history of a small community which survived persecution and deprivation to build a new life in alien surroundings. The immigrants were met with hostility and naked xenophobia. Keir Hardie tried to raise the rabble against them for "growing fat on four shillings a week". The Lithuanian community, however, made a strong contribution to modern Scotland. The sons and daughters of that community are now fully integrated into the nation, but this is a record of the early years.
