5.0 out of 5 stars A must-have for all interested in merchant shipping!, 18 Oct 2000
By A Customer
This is a fantastic book, which comprehensively details records of merchant shipping and seamen, making them accessible to all. It would be of use to all interested in merchant shipping, from the family historian to the academic. Smith et al clearly explain which records are extant and how to use them. It covers records from the 16th century up until the present day, home trade, foreign trade and war service and so is pretty comprehensive. The book is particularly useful in that it gives the Public Record Office location mark, of all relevant material. Essential reading for all those trying to trace mariner ancestors!
