Product Description

Synopsis

Since his angst ridden adolescent years in "Colditz" through to life as a greying father of two, Gary has been writing to his idol, David Bowie. Through 30 years of one-way correspondence we now look back over time, in which both men have overcome life's obstacles. From Ziggy Stardust to Glass Spiders and a nervous, naive teenager to unfulfilled adult. Through it all, Gary has shared his most intimate thoughts with his hero. Bowie's songs serve as succour, offering inspiration in his moments of bitterness, confusion and anxiety, and finally, liberation.

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST for any 40somethings from the Ziggy era!!, 11 Jan 2003
I have just finished reading Major Tom and I would thoroughly recommend it not just to all David Bowie fans but particularly to those who like Gary in the book were young teenagers when 'Starman' hit the charts and became lifelong fans. For me, the early part of the book which covers the early 70's Ziggy era was particularly poignant and I remember all the things Gary writes about in his letters to David as though they were yesterday. I too was totally smitten by Ziggy - I covered my walls with pictures and eagerly sought out interviews, articles etc even to the point of cutting and colouring my hair to look like him.
The progress of the years from teenager to grown up, married with kids, is a journey which in the book takes place through Gary's regular letters to David, and is a great trip down memory lane for all of us 40somethings who are still fans of the great man.
I suggest you buy it now - you won't regret it!!

2.0 out of 5 stars Nice idea but ultimately not a success, 12 Aug 2008
By G. Airey (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Being a big Bowie fan, I couldn't resist the intriguing idea behind this book. It's essentially a novel in the form of letters (written between 1972 and 2002) from 'Gary Weightman' to his idol David Bowie. Only a few pages in, though, I began to get irritated by the style and content of the letters. They are either exercises in showing off an admittedly well-researched knowledge of Bowie and his works, or clunking, unenlightening tracts of cultural analysis. If you're a fan yourself, you won't learn much from the former but you might well find the latter as tedious as I did. I persevered out of genuine interest in Bowie and a lifelong aversion to leaving books unfinished, but I wouldn't buy it again with hindsight.
