3.0 out of 5 stars Photo-atlas of flowers of cultivated woody plants, 4 Oct 2000
By A Customer
This is a well-printed and well-bound volume on glossy paper. It presents colour pictures of the flowers of cultivated woody plants (trees, shrubs & climbers) from the world. Since the photographer is Australian there is a slight bias towards the flowers of that continent, but not too bad. Of plants which are grown primarily for their leafs the leafs are shown rather than the flowers. In single cases it is the fruit which is featured. A book like this is always a compromise, and to my taste too much space is devoted to widely grown genera (cf Bougainvillea, Camellia), on which entire volumes are available for devotees. The botanical names are not the latest (e.g. no Corymbia) but do not seem too badly out of date (Senna is here). A minor minus point is that the individual pictures are smallish (however these are of a distictly better size than in, say, "Hortica"). A major minus point is that a (very) considerable proportion of photographs is just out of focus. Nevertheless there are some excellent photographs here.
