Product Description

Synopsis

This is an account of how, in 1994, the chief executive of a British firm, Dutton Engineering, broke out of the traditional mould to create a dynamic, profitable and model company that won the prestigious Wedgewood Trophy for Business Excellence. The book presents the reader with a clear business vision and describes how this was turned into reality. It should help managers and staff of companies and organizations of all sizes from all sectors. Among the areas examined are: why companies must change; the Dutton way; how to overcome the barriers to change; what is the true cost of poor quality; the role of trust; what is true empowerment; how to build flexible, effective and innovative teams; how to develop staff confidence and commitment; new forms of organization; what to do about dinosaurs; how to work closely with suppliers to cut costs; and how to develop a company-wide Kaizen culture. Change is inevitable and, where no change exists, it is best to resolve to get on with it. This book provides a proven path to follow.

5.0 out of 5 stars Remove the barriers to change successfully and profitably., 20 May 2001
By A Customer
This book is a must for strategic, tactical and operational managers, not forgetting shop floor staff. The role of managers has changed dramatically over the last 20 years.

Kaizen, Kanban, JIT, SPC, TQM and Business Excellence are familiar terms in management circles. Their implementation need not be painful. Read 'How to Transform Your Company and Enjoy It' and digest how everyone in a small company rose to the challenge of many changes and how they won many awards.

Learn how people bought into the changes at Dutton Engineering. Learn about leadership styles, reconciling customer's demand with existing resources and about the value of knowledge management.

Having embarked on a BA Administration Management Course, I read this book, as a case study to clarify some of the terms already mentioned. It certainly took the pain out of study as it is one of the most enjoyable, enlightening and entertaining success stories I have read.

May I pay tribute to everyone involved with the book and I would highly recommend it both as an aid to study, for business improvement and simply for enjoyable reading!

Janet Flinn

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't lend this to anybody you will never see it again., 30 Mar 2006
Prior to attending a businss workshop where Sir Ken was the guest speaker, I must be honest and say that I had never heard of him or Dutton engineering, and was not particulally looking forward to the evenings events.
I listened to his presentation and have to say that I was blown away, I was listening to what I thought was a dinasaur with modern Ideas and it really inspired me.
I bought the book hoping that it would be as entertaining as his presentation, and was not disappointed.
The only problem was that a colleague borrowed the book and never returned it, I started a management course at college and bought the book again to show some of the students, the lecturer borrowed it and yet again I never got it back.
I have recently started a diploma course and this copy I have recently purchased will not be leaving my sight.
Use the book as an aide memoire to sound busines management or as an idea maker to get you thinking outside of the box and you will not be dissapointed.
The book covers the basic princiles that Sir Ken implemented when he took over the running of Dutton engineering, and how he transformed the fortunes of a company near liquidation to a class leader, also winning numerous enterprise awards.
The book covers various aspects of managing change and also understanding of motivational issues, the basis of the book is Kaisen (continuous improvement) principles togerer with motivation and most importantly waste management to give a thouroughly insparational read.
