Product Description

Product Description
Hitori is the latest puzzle craze from Japan ? a fiendish game of logic and numbers that will have you scratching your head and pulling out your hair. The rules are very simple, but don?t let that deceive you! These teaserswill put all your powers of logic and patience to the test. Players must shade in the grid squares until there are no duplicate numbers in a row or column. None of the shaded squares can touch except for diagonally, and all of the white squares must connect on at least one side. Nothing could be simpler? right? Varying in difficulty from easy coffee-break distractions to puzzles that steal your weekend, and with full instructions, tips, and solutions at the back, this book has everything you need to become a Hitori master. So sharpen your pencil, put the kettle on, and pit your wits against these puzzling giants!

About the Author
Dan Lindop and Andy Johnston, experienced puzzle designers and authors, take the reader step-by-step through the rules of the game and provide handy hints and tricks to help turn anyone into a Hitori master! Tougher than Sudoku, these puzzles are designed for the dedicated puzzler, but once you get the hang of how to play, they're completely addictive. Hitori is played on a grid of squares, each cell containing a number. Your task is to block out some of the cells so that there are no duplicate numbers in any row or column. Blacked-out cells also cannot touch each other, except diagonally. The other cells must all touch orthogonally, to create a single group. Exciting and addictive, these puzzles will allow the growing army of Sudoku and Kakuro fans to stay one step ahead of the game.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice quality paper, shame about the puzzles...so far, 19 April 2007

Note to Times Publications:, when publishing puzzle books such like this, make sure you make your books with decent paper and ink that does not fade after the third rubbing out or generate holes in the paper after the fourth.

This and the second book in the series have satisfyingly thick paper that lends itself precisely to this kind of puzzle-abuse. I enjoy Hitori immensely and the harder levels of the puzzle require a lot of 'working forward' as it were, before you know which square to fill in, this requires some guess work and lots of rubbing out and filling in again.

However, rather dissappointingly, the first puzzle (and third puzzle) in the book, which are the easiest level and designed to introduce the beginner to Hitori are not really perfect.

I will already assume you know what Hitori Puzzles are, but for a square to be black or white there must be some sound reasoning behind it. In the first puzzle, you are left with 2 squares which can be either or. There is no 'proved reasoning' as such to which they are and, it seems after finding this also on the third puzzle (where 1 square can be either or), that if there is no 'logical' reason for it to be black, it must be white. Only by having to check in the answers do I come to this conclusion. Answers should be for verifying not used for wondering what the setter decided the square should be in this case.

This is frustrating and is a kin to a crossword or sudoku puzzle having more than one possible solution. It is just not satisfying.

If you want a good Hitori book (especially if you are a beginner) then I can strongly recommend the book by Gareth Moore. The paper is not as good quality (not as bad as the Times publications though), but the puzzles are all logically perfect and have more sizes to keep you interested.

To that end I can only give it three stars for the quality of the publication.
