I'd typically use a biography as a sleep aid but this Christmas present is an intellectual, philosophical and emotional caffeine-fuelled "get up and go".

It's one thing to realise that Mill encapsulates many of the ideas that represent the modern political battleground, quite another to discover that he is an inspiration and guide for a modern "life well lived". That's not to say that Reeves' compelling portrait presents an adoring fan's view of Mill. Indeed one of the elements which makes Reeves' account so engaging is that he sees Mill warts and all and is quick to acknowledge the occasional gaps between thought and action. The life story and the political thinking are thus seen in tandem. This is not a dry analysis.

Mill represents one of Britain's few genuine claims to a philosopher and intellectual of world import and Reeves reinforces and does justice to that status. This is a work which genuinely sheds light on what it means to be liberal.

Not simply for those who are already politically engaged, this is essential reading for anyone who believes society does exist and they are part of it.

To those of us who are not historians but are nonetheless interested in the subject, this is an outstanding and highly readable biography of a truly great philosopher, politician and economist. Importantly, it also provides an excellent account of the era in which he lived and those whose philosophy or politics he disagreed with. Mill is, like everyone, a flawed individual and some of his writings make little sense looking at them from a 21 century perspective. However, the bulk of his work is highly relevant today and Reeves biography provides a powerful insight into Mills thinking and his background. THis is a must read book for anyone who wants to understand the philosophical underpinnings for the liberal society in which we live or aspire to.

Richard Reeves has written a fine biography. He covers everything one could reasonably expect. His judgements on Mill are usually sound, as well, though sometimes he was off the mark. The style is a little ponderous in places, but the narrative fairly zips along most of the time, However, although the content was fine, there was a maddening number of typos. Very surprising in a book of this magnitude.

One buys this sort of book for the subject, not the author. Mill is a compelling individual, warts and all (and there are a few). It is very much to the credit of Reeves that he has done Mill justice with this account.
