Product Description

Product Description

Britain and Ireland are home to thousands of spiritual and legendary sites. From well-known places of magic and intrigue, such as Stonehenge and Newgrange Abbey, to obscure caves and holy wells, where fairies dwell and unexplaned phenomena occur, these islands have a wealth of awe-inspiring locations. Richard Jones has travelled the length and breadth of Britain and Ireland, searching for the most mystical sites and places of secrets and magic, all of which are open to the public. He has investigated stories of Arthurian legend; examined Druid stones, Roman temples, tombs and quoits; and explored areas that are shrouded in myth and the source of ancient legend. Richard then describes these places of spiritual energy in detail and with enthusiasm. He reveals the origins of the myths and legends, tells the stories of the enigmatic characters that have been involved with them, and paints an evocative picture of these spiritual places. This captivating guide to over 100 mystical places is illustrated with a combination of dramatic, specially-commissioned photography. There are maps of each region and all the places covered can be visited by members of the public; the address and phone numbers of each location is included within each entry.

4.0 out of 5 stars More details on how to find these places would have been useful.., 1 Mar 2008

Given I'm a self-confessed geek, I love stuff like this. Mystical Britain and Ireland covers "over 100 important places of ancient worship and legend." It's broken down into sections, which usually cover 2/3 counties at a time. Places covered include religious places of worship; for example churches, abbeys, monasteries; stone circles; wells; castles; and much more. Each entry is accompanied by some background about the place in question, how it was built, when, and whether there are any myths and legends surrounding the place.

It contains photographs of many of the places, some more recent than others, and a basic map shows you where the places are. However, my only criticism is the book doesn't give any exact addresses. In this day and age it would have been incredibly useful to have a full address, telephone number and website address, if there was one. Some of the places would be pretty difficult to find, as they're not all hugely popular tourist attractions. Other than that, though, this is an incredibly useful and interesting book for anyone into historical relics and similar.
