Product Description

Product Description
This is the manual for anyone who wants to become a skilled upholsterer. The book contains a total of 15 step-by-step projects. The first eight are basic skills projects and collectively these explain the key skills needed to complete any upholstery task. The projects include a drop-in-bottom chair, an overstuffed seat, caning, a box cushion and recovering a modern chair. The remaining seven projects involve the application of skills learnt in the first chapter. Pieces featured are an Art Deco armchair, a wing chair, a chaise longue and a leather chesterfield. A basic techniques section is included, but the aim of this book is to get straight in to the projects, getting hands-on experience of upholstery. There is information on the tools and materials needed, where to look for furniture that you can upholster and advice on choosing fabric. No other book on the market takes such a clear, progressive approach to teaching upholstery.

About the Author
Ruth Dye took up upholstery as a hobby. As she gained more experience she found that she had a real aptitude for the craft; word spread and she soon found that she could earn her living doing upholstery. Together with her partner David they formed the business, Oldsofas.com, a website from which they sell upholstered furniture. They now have a thriving business and live and work in south-west Wales.

5.0 out of 5 stars Complete Step-By-Step Upholstery by David Sowle and Ruth Dye, 3 Jul 2005
By H L Morton (Cheddar, England) - See all my reviews
This beautiful, inspirational book seduced me into believing that I could reupholster an antique sofa of tricky dimensions.
The gorgeous photographs, clear illustrations and sensible step-by-step instructions were logical and easy to follow. The completion of each stage was satisfying and thrilling and enhanced my confidence in my ability to complete the project. to a professional level. The final result is a pleasingly luxurious and elegant sofa. I can't believe I did it myself and treasure the book that made it possible.

4.0 out of 5 stars Helpful book with great photo's, 22 May 2008

This I think is a book for beginners. It is generously sized and includes actual photographs of each of the projects being demonstrated. It doesn't contain a great deal of text, working mainly with lists of what you need then showing you exactly what to do. There is a good range of projects covering just about any seating upholstery project you might want to tackle. I particularly like the photo's showing where various tools are used (as a beginner, some of the pins and needles look rather oddly shaped to me so its good to see what they are actually meant for!). Well worth buying.

3.0 out of 5 stars good-looking book, 1 Aug 2007
By Sergey Begaikin (Kazakhstan, Almaty) - See all my reviews

In spite of the book contains the huge information about reupholstering the old furniture No new methods described. For example the polyurethane foam is not a deal- the only horse hair and so on. The method of material calculations not included also like as you already have the fabrics factory in your home and don't need to by the fabrics.
In any case the book can be helpfull for the people who is interesting in remodeling of old armchairs or chairs in conjunction with old master secrets. Just be prepared to have all necessary materials in your hands.
Good luck.
