I bought "Coll the Storyteller's Tales of Enchantment" after my daughter and I had read "Atticus the Storyteller", by the same author & artist, a number of times. The structure of both books is the same with a thread of a story, in this case Coll's attempt to "find the mythic Avalon, home of King Arthur, and lay the thirteen sacred treasures to rest" alternating with Celtic myths.

I personally didn't find this book as easy to read or enjoy as Atticus. This may be due to the fact that I knew none of the Celtic myths, whereas the Greek myths are very familiar to me. It could also be a result of my total inability to pronounce various names (even with the handy pronunciation guide included) which led to a more stilted reading aloud.

My 5 yr old daughter, however, has maintained an interest (we have been reading one or two stories a night for the past three weeks now) and seems to enjoy the book. I will only know whether "Coll" has been successful if she wants to read it again.

It seems unfair to rate this book as a result of a comparison with another but Atticus was far more compelling and much more enjoyable - even aesthetically, due to the fact there is no colour in Coll's tales, there is no comparison.

An interesting read, a learning experience but so far not the warm fuzzy feeling we had from getting to know Atticus.
