5.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive but beware the town maps, 15 Aug 2006
The Faroes aren't enormous so it's quite possible for a guide book to cover every single village and hamlet. And that's exactly what James Proctor has done here. Although there have inevitably been some changes since the book was printed in 2004 (eg the new tunnel from Leirvik to Klaksvik now complete, car ferry to Kalsoy, great new pub and guest house in Tvoryori etc) the level of detail is comprehensive and easy to follow.

Altogether I would heartily recommend this book. The minor criticisms which follow are designed to be constructive rather than a reason not to buy a copy of what is by far the best practical guidebook for the Faroes in the English-language.

The biggest criticisms are
1) that with so much detail, it can occasionally be hard to sift out at a glance what is a real highlight and what is just covered for the sake of completeness. In fact page 23 does give a very sensible overview of the highlights, as does each chapter intro, but it would be easier for the user to have highlights depicted more visually perhaps as a map, a set of sample itineraries or perhaps bullet points with why the places are good (and parhaps a very subjective star rating).

2) there numerous errors in the town and village maps: on many of these there seems to have been only the vaguest attempt to place icons in the correct place (the Vestmanna map is particularly notable - both banks and post office are on the wrong side of the road, Cafe Bryggan is in entirely the wrong place, the guest house isn't marked - nor mentioned in the text - while the tourist dock area seems poorly drawn. Presumably the tourist info office and dockside restaurant hadn't opened at the time the book was researched).
Certain maps seem to be based entirely upon the tourist board sketch maps even when these are not very accurate or to scale (as at Sorvagur). Since the towns in question are small these errors don't actually create major problems for the reader, but it would be nice to see the maps made much more accurate for a future edition.

As mentioned, however, these gripes are relatively minor compared to the great usefulness and comprehensive coverage of this book. I fully recommend it and hope that an updated edition will follow before too long.

5.0 out of 5 stars Undoubtedly the best guide on the market, 3 Dec 2004
By A Customer
This is the first English language guide to the Faroe Islands and is an absolute winner. The author, James Proctor, clearly knows these islands like the back of his hand and has done a fantastic job at giving up to date and accurate tourist information for one of Europe's most alluring destinations. He's not only included extensive details about hiking trails and tips on birdwatching, but there's detailed information about where to stay and how to get around the Faroes. There is no doubt in my mind that this is the best book I have seen on the Faroe Islands - concise, incisive and an excellent all round read. Don't go to the Faroes without this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything you need to know in one book, 1 Jul 2005
By Estelle Clark "Estelle" (London, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I have just returned from a 2 week holiday in the Faeores and found this guide indispensible. The information in bang up to date e.g. the colour of people's houses(!)and and really practical. Based on the information in the book I took a 6 island, single day, tour involving boat, helicopter, bus and walking without any mishap. A single wrong piece of infirmation and I would still be there!

I am a keen natuire lover and this book contains much more relevent information that is normal. For me, more about birds and less about tax free shopping is a real improvement in a guide book.
