5.0 out of 5 stars A must see and read book - a history unfolding, 1 Nov 1999
By A Customer
For anyone who approaches the millenium with the view that it's nothing more than a calendar date, and a moment in time rather than history - read this book. It's evocative pictures are testament to the march of time as it affects a small Ayrshire town. We see and read of buildings long gone, but probably considered by those who lived or worked in them to have been somehow eternal. The population, captured on film as they go about their business, remind us that even more than buildings our tenure is fleeting. This book doesn't describe history, but allows our imaginations to develop it and feel it as we respond to the pictures. Who are these people, what happened to that building, factory or business? This book doesn't just work for locals - everyone needs to be reminded that in a few short years the world will change around them. At the end of a century and millenium it's a healthy reflection.
