Product Description

Product Description
Through numerous sources in the police force and local indigenous communities, Bloodstain is the most in-depth analysis of the Falconio trial. Richard Shears is the only journalist who has interviewed the parents of Brad Murdoch, the South Australian drug-runner acused of Falconio's murder. Before the trial Shears studied the crime scene with local aboriginal trackers and helped highlight the glaring contradictions in the court's evidence. He was also uniquely privy to police reports and witnesses' statements in the build up to the trial. Bloodstain reveals the changing testimony of key witnesses, Joanne Lees' secret affair before Falconio's disappearance, the mystery of the bloodstains and the conflicting evidence upon which the whole trial was based.

About the Author
A journalist for over forty years, Richard Shears is the Australian correspondent for The Daily Mail, Shears has written over 20 books in his time, covering a number of Australian subjects such as the disappearance of Azaria Chamberlain, the Ivan Milat murders and the sinking of the Greenpeace vessel, The Rainbow Warrior.

5.0 out of 5 stars Judge the evidence for yourself, 14 Jan 2006
This is a fascinating read for those interested in this mystery. The book focuses on those events that we know occurred, whilst posing the questions that remain to be answered. Clearly the writer believes that Joanne Lees has changed her story too many times to have been a credible witness, and although the verdict was not unexepected, you feel that he believes Bradley Murdoch was not given the benefit of 'reasonable doubt' by virtue of DNA results.

Unfortunately, the book, like the trial itself, fails to provide the definitive answers as to what really happened on the Stuart Highway. The theories are endless, but then, that's what makes it such a fascinating mystery!

Well worth reading.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bloodstain, 6 Jan 2006
By A Customer
Richard Shears did well to bring out this book so quickly after the trial. He reinforces the questions on this trial that have not been cleared up and don't add up. I read non stop for two days. If Murdoch saw Ms Lees at Alice Springs, why did he follow for four hours and two hundred miles on a deserted road before pouncing? Lees and Falconio had refuelled at Ti Tree and then watched the sunset, surely M, a professional driver, would have caught up by then and seen she was not alone, and yet he persued for another sixty miles? Why did he shoot Falconio on the road, when he could have forced him in amongst the trees, especially as he was supposedly so fastidious as to then remove the body and drive off with it in his vehicle and... leave behind the prize he had driven 200 miles out of his way for? Doesn't a serial killer takes his victims away from the road in amongst the trees where no-one will ever find them? Why have an easily recognisable dog with you if you are a killer and rapist? Grant Algy made a mistake by accusing the police of falsly planting DNA. If he had accused of incompetence and possibly passing on the DNA through a handshake and touching the evidence it would have raised doubts. I would have liked the book to have shown where Broome is on the map of Australia, because when you see that, then there is no reason for Murdoch to have been on the Stuart Highway. Unless, he had followed Lees for 200 miles and gone out of his way with a vehicle full of illegal drugs and a large sum of money. It would have been helpful to show the different States of Australia on the map because the book constantly refers to them and I looked back at the map a number of times. All in all though I did not put the book down.

3.0 out of 5 stars Bloodstain - The vanishing of Peter Falconio, 14 Mar 2006
By A Customer
It was clear from the outset that this book was writen by a journalist. I found that his opinion not based on fact was irritating. He interestingly enough has strong opinions on Joanne Lees selling her story to the newspapers for financial gain... which is just what he has done. At least Joanne is able to tell the truth, not suggest facts.
This murder case is fasinating, but I should have waited until a book was published by a Police Officer or family member in order that the full facts could be told.
