Product Description

Product Description
Although at least 150 books have been penned about Scotland's national hero and the movie Braveheart catapulted his story to international folk hero status, the real William Wallace remains elusive. He is an enigma and it is hard to separate fact from fiction when examining either his exploits or his personal life. Even without popular embellishment, the life of William Wallace is the stuff of romance; a formidable warrior, he rose from comparative obscurity to become Guardian of Scotland, leading the successful popular uprising against Edward 1 of England which thwarted that monarch's plans to annexe Scotland. Having been betrayed and after a mock trial he was brutally killed in a horrific manner at Smithfield Elms in London on August 22nd 1305.
The author was fortunate enough during the writing of another book to have gained access to the Loudoun archives at Dumfries House in Ayrshire, some 200,000 ancient family documents. Material he discovered during his research there there set him off on the Wallace trail in the steps of Scotland's hero. This book is the result of his dogged search for the real story of Sir William and his impact on the history of the Scottish nation. During the journey artefacts previously thought lost were found and locations associated with his life re-discovered. As is often the case, the reality proves to be far more interesting than the myth.

5.0 out of 5 stars A New Perspective - At Last!, 18 May 2003

(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
How refreshing to come accross a book which says something new and daring about William Wallace, Scotland's military hero from the Wars of Independence. This book uses a wealth of research from new sources to prove once and for all where his exact birthplace was.
It then goes on to follow him through the course of his short life, allowing Wallace pilgrims and devotees the opportunity to follow in his very large footsteps. There are plenty of photos and directions to keep you on the right track. A tourist to Scotland who wanted to visit Wallace sites would love this part of the book. Although I am local to the area I also found this section very useful. Years of research have obviously gone into this work.
So whether you are new to the Wallace legend or a seasoned campaigner you should be happy with this book which is nicely packaged and printed by a small, local company. Five stars.

3.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book on the Subject of Wallace and his life, 3 Jan 2001
This book has been well researched and details many places that Sir William Wallace was reputed to have been throughout his life. Maps and descriptions have been added for the reader's benefit, so that the trail can be followed to seek out the history. The question of Wallace's birthplace has been answered here, although I'm sure the subject will lead to more controversy. A well written, clear and concise book with all the detail required for a reader new to the subject.
