2.0 out of 5 stars what a confusing book!, 11 Jan 2002
By A Customer
I bought this before I started to learn Arabic, and although it has had some useful moments, on the whole it is so confusing trying to find the right word that I've abandoned it and bought a better dictionary.
For a start, the Arabic-English section is completely crazy...the layout was obviously designed by someone who does not read Arabic, as it does not read entirely left to right or entirely right to left, but a confusing mix of both.
It uses the root system for finding Arabic words, which can be annoying for beginners. Another bad point is that not all plurals are given.
Also I cannot believe it was revised in 1995, as words such as "automobile", "debate", and "vaccination" are included in the New words supplement at the back!
The only advantage I can think of is that it has both English-Arabic and Arabic-English sections, so it is light to carry when travelling in the Arab world, but apart from that, I would not recommend this dictionary to anyone...even my Arab friends have trouble finding words in it!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good for people learning Arabic, 19 Sep 1999
By A Customer
This dictionary is very good. You should have this book if you are learning Arabic. But I think it needs an introduction (which is why I have given it 4 crowns instead of 5).

2.0 out of 5 stars If you already know Arabic, this may be of value., 25 Mar 1999
By A Customer
As a dictionary this may be useful to someone who already knows Arabic, but it will be difficult for a beginning or intermediate student of Arabic. Abreviations for parts of speech are given for English but not for Arabic. Going from English to Arabic, the exact sense of a word is not given so you can't really be certain what you might be saying. Pick an English word and you get two or three Arabic words. Look those up and (if you can find them) you get somewhat different English words. You won't find a single 'naughty bit' either.

Moreover, it is UK English (you can find a biscuit but you'll get no cookies here) which results in some curious word choices.

It is definitely not for a beginner and the intermediate student will need a fairly good grasp of Arabic.
