a lovely book full of details, 9 Oct 2002
For someone wanting to know the detail of Castle, why they were built, how they were built and their evolutions through the centuries they were used, this is a wonderful treat. Loaded full of pictures to illustrate, he covers the Castle in the 12th century all the way through the coming of the big cannons that made them useless, and beyond to their becoming private family homes. Gives you a list of castles to visit and further reading list. Wonder book for someone wanting to visit Scotland's Castles from their armchair.

An Excellent Introduction to Scotland's Castles, 8 Jun 2003
By A Customer
A superb, readable introduction to Scotland's castles and tower houses by a real expert in his field, with particular emphasis on those in the care of the Scottish Government (Historic Scotland) and so easily accessible to the public. Only slight gripe is the limited number of colour illustrations. Nonetheless, definitely recommended reading.

Having toured the Scottish highlands and Edinburgh, I craved the history and details of the splendid castles. Chris Tabraham does a great job with both hostorical and photographic detail.
